: "Decontenting" of 2004 trucks
JRKRACE 08-29-2004, 01:52 PM Well I just got a 1000 miles on my 2004 GMC SLT Crew. Gasser. What I can't believe is the amount of stuff missing compared to my 2002 EX Cab. If I had bought a 2002 Crew I would of still kept it. Here's what I found so far.
1. Underhood Light.(mentioned before)
2. No glovebox light.(ditto)
3. Short overhead console as opposed to full size console.
4. No footwell lights.
5.Door panels on the 2002 were much nicer with the velour type fabric on the upper part.
6. IIRC a much smaller A/C accumulator in the 2004 opposed to the 2002 which may explain why my A/C really sucks.
7. 2002's had a detachable valence under the front bumper where the 2004 does not. Kinda stinks if you put a plow on it(which I will) and want to return it to stock.
8. The bright moulding extended onto the bed of my 2002 and stops short at the end of the cab on the 2004.
Did I miss anything? I just can't stand when GM gives all these rebates and then steals it from somewhere else.I ll pay a little more for these things as it makes the product that much better...Sorry for ranting......Edited by: JRKRACE
GMC2500HD 08-29-2004, 05:28 PM Well first off all you need to revise your post and add a topic, hard to get in without one.. Also some of those things are just creature comforts you must learn to live without I guess. Not sure why there is no light under the hood (was never that bright anyway) and as for the glovebox, I don't put anything in there so no need for light in there. The A/C could be better but I think mine has handled the 95+ degree weather here, no complaints. As for valence, no blow needed here except to move dust off the street from lack of wind and the damn heat.... Also on the door panels, those have pretty much changed yearly IIRC, I know the ones on my 2002 were different than the 03 and now the 04... Guess that is some more ingenius GM engineering.

JRKRACE 08-29-2004, 07:45 PM Sorry about the topic title. Maybe it's me. It just irks me when there is such a tight market for these trucks, GM goes and cuts corners. I have had GM trucks for 20 years staring with a POS '78 Chevy Van. Had mostly K-5 Blazers, Tahoes, Suburbans, and pick-ups and never has a newer one been shortchanged on the one it has replaced. The new Fords for example add the new trailer brake. I also noticed that they put the climate controls on the steering wheel also in addition to the radio, etc. This to me is an improvement while GM makes it obvious that it is getting cheap. I dunno maybe i'm a little too anal but it was a surprise.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif
JRKRACE 08-29-2004, 07:49 PM ....not for anything, but the lack of footwell lights on a dark pewter interior makes you want to carry a flashlight on the keychain...My 2002 lit up like a football field at night when you opened the door... Edited by: JRKRACE
StraitDiesel 08-29-2004, 09:51 PM After I was done helping my girlfriend move into college, she had stuff to do, so I went about the town to kill time. I stopped at a Ford Dealership and looked at a 2005 Ford f-250 crew cab/shortbed lariat. It had all the bells and whistles. I took a look underneath and you should see the steering linkage and the new front suspension! It's all parts off the F-550. The parts are huge! Then I got real curious and test drove it. The thing was really, really nice and made me think my Chevy was inadequate. It even has a factory boost gauge on it! It was very quick (for stock) and seemed stoutly built.

gearhead 08-29-2004, 10:43 PM only hade to remove the tow hooks to mount my western pro plow.
TEXMudder 08-29-2004, 10:52 PM Other brands are doing the same thing. Some time late last year Ford dropped the hood blanket, hood light, glove box light, etc.
OC_DMAX 08-29-2004, 11:04 PM Does the 2004 have a locking spare time access port? How about the wiring harness for the brake controller (present in 2002 but missing in 2003 I believe). Two things that come to mind.

Mine does.
502_Jimmy 08-30-2004, 09:15 AM Couple more for ya..
Wiper arms that do not stay up, the 03 nixed that.. As a matter of fact the ones on my 03 D/A actually go up further than the 04 Suburban.. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif
The '04's lost the tint at the top of the winshield. My 03 again has this, but not the 04.
The 04's lost the little LED light (amber/green) next to the headlamp switch that tell you the status of your headlights... 02's don't have this, but the 03's did, now the 04 its gone again..
The chrome was removed from the mirrors on the 02 to 03's
The console in my 03 and 04 bugs my knee. Whereas the 02 was comfy..
We lost the cabin filter for the HVAC..
Winter fronts dont come standard anymore on the D/A
With that said, I do like some of the "upgrades" we did get.. Power fold mirrors, auto down on both front windows, better dash lighting, "Better" http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Wink.gif sound system.
I do miss those other features though..

JRKRACE 09-05-2004, 12:59 PM .forgot to add the fact that the headrests do not adjust back and forth like the other one..just up and down...
tysmith 09-05-2004, 07:40 PM Most of the time, you can see one up close and personal at the stealer. That's when you should pick up on these things. A bit hard when ordering early in the model year, I'll give you that.
I think everyone is SO revved up about getting their new toy / work horse, that you don't even pay attention until after you get it. Then my friend, it's too late.
In the broad scheme of things, they are all very minor. If you knew up front that these things weren't present, would you have cancelled the order? I'm guessing not.
Just look at the items missing as future mods you can make when you get a minute of free time.
Hell, I didn't notice my front bumper was crooked until a week after I got the damn thing. And guess what - It's still crooked. That's one of the items on MY list http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Wink.gif.
