Do you need a fuel injector removal and install tool or is it just a certain size socket????

Some guys just use a 30mm deep socket but you run the risk of damaging the return line barbs.

Snap-on, OTC and several others make a specific injector socket. They run about $35-$40.

Yes,

Well, partly yes, a 30 MM or 1 3/16 socket, deep enough to get over the return line nubs.

I did mine a month ago, bought a 30 mm deep socket from NAPA, found it didn't fit over the return line fittings, returned it and took an injector with me to find the 1 3/16 deep socket they had fit over the return line nubs.

Your best bet is a genuine detroit diesel injector socket, it has a hex on the top to allow a 7/8 wrench to get into tight spots, i.e.: psgr side exhaust manifold.

They didn't have one in stock so I went with one that fit the injector, and ended up grinding a fair sized bevel on the top to get in between the psgr side manifold.

Get the right one if you can, if not though, I would say get the shortest deep socket that will fit on the injector over the return line.

I tried using a 30mm socket as well but quickly returned it for a OTC 5060 injector socket, it is very short and has the top that will accept a wrench. It is pricey at 50.00$ Can. pesos.

I have the correct Snap-On injector socket that I loan people with promise to return it when finished.

Shipping to and from the US can be a little stupid for us Canucks otherwise I would have chrisk1500 send you mine. Maybe nvmtnlion or another member can hook you up.

I have mailed similar size objects to various locations in the US, and the postage would probably be about 6 bucks.

However, mailing tools around to people you don't know, is somewhat risky.

Go buy a socket, get the right one and it will cost about 30 or 40 bucks US, or just do what I did and get a 30 MM or 1 3/16 socket that fits.

I paid 20 Canadian beans for one, and while I would not recommend that particular one, it did the job.

I have seen others since that I know would work much better for about the same price.

Doing your own work of this nature is saving you heaps of money, I don't know what a dealer would charge for an injector change, but on another board recently one fellow was quoted 1200 dollars,

So go out and buy a socket, and you're still 1180 dollars ahead, if that is the going rate, that is...

Before I did my injectors I called the one and only Diesel shop in the city. I tried to get a "book price" on changing 8 injectors if I supplied the injectors. First question from the mech was, "where are you getting the injectors". He hummed and hawed and finally said it would be 8 hours if all went well.....you know all wouldn't go well so let's say 10 hours, not that it's going to take that long because it didn't take me that long and I did glow plugs at the same time.

So......10 hrs @ $90 per hour (is that the going rate) = $900 plus tax....14% = $1026. My socket cost me $40 from the same place I bought my injectors and glow plugs.

Money in my pocket = $986....Thank you very much!

I used a 30mm axel nut socket.... plenty deep enough. Got it for 14.95 at Advanced Auto Parts

I started changing the injectors with a 30mm axle socket it was real PIA, I took it back and got the OTC pn# 5060 for 30$ more, what an improvement well worth the money and I'm a cheap SOB, not much worse than changing spark plug on a car now. I did have the turbo removed which made things easier. Cut the small return lines on the injectors and get the metal hose clamps off any way that is the easiest like vise grips, don't worry about saving them just get a return line kit from a injection shop.

WOW $1000.00 doesn't get you very much a garage. Their not getting my money if I can help it.
