Ok boys, I need a little help.

I guess I just lost my virginity because I got my first "check engine light." Truck has about 5,400 miles. I'm on Cape Cod about 65 miles from my home dealership and it is Saturday morning. I was running very low on fuel, warning came on the DIC and I had to go about another 5 miles before fueling up (truck did NOT run out of fuel.) I fueled it up (I know it was diesel but can't speak to the quality of it). Left the gas station and went to get coffee, truck idled for about 10 minutes. Left the coffee shop and drove about another 3 miles when the truck started running crappy and the light came on. DIC also indicated the range was "---" and the fuel guage read empty. Shut it right down and let it sit about 2 minutes. When I started it again the truck ran fine (went about 5 miles), the fuel guage read full and my range was as it should be, but engine light stayed on. Local dealerships have no diesel guys on Saturday. What do I do? Is it safe to drive it back to Boston or should I wait around for a dealership here on Monday. Any help would be appreciated.

Could have just grabbed a air pocket, low fuel sloshing around at the pick up in the tank. Either just Pump the Primer till it has resistance or open bleeder and prime to confirm clear of air.

Another possibility,

If you have On star or there is a AutoZone around you can retrieve the code and confirm or get some diagnostics.

If it doesn't repeat it was probably just something minor.Or if your looking to extend your weekend ,well, wait for the dealer to open Monday!

Hopefully you already have your answer, but I'd feel safe driving it home, sounds like a fluke. Have you ever changed the fuel filter? The CEL will probably clear after a number of key or warm-up cycles depending on what the problem was . . . some codes require FORTY warm-up cycles to clear.

WAG: Something might have stuck in the level meter and confused the truck?

Thanks guys. I think you were both right. I left the truck for a few hours, when I came back and turned over the ignition, the CEL was gone and she is running smoothly. I'm going to drive it home.

Thanks again.

Fuel gauges are slow to respond to fillups if you hadn't noticed. Sometimes take a mile before she reads full. Sounds like you sucked in air but as a precaution I would change the fuel filter.

Also, make sure your fuel cap is on well, and "click" it several times after fill-up. Don't just tighten it until it clicks once.

txguppy,

I thought the click type gas caps wouldn't get any tighter no matter how many times you clicked them. . . I thought that was why they made them, to keep from overtightening the cap. . . Any thoughts?

Dennis I had a car that would throw a code if I didn't click the cap enough. One click=code, whole mess of clicks=no code.

Okay, I got it now. (Just how many is a whole mess of clicks?) I've always just done one or if I got carried away a few. . .

Thanks,
