Bad news, 4 pistons are burnt http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif. Thinking of just swapping out the engine now.

Thinking about picking up one of these.

It says you get $300 CAD off for an online purchase.

How much does $6000 CAD come to in USD, peninsular diesel was $8400 USD for a performance rebuild. They're in upper michigan I'd assume.

To go from USD to Canadian is approx. multiply by 1.6

$8400 USD x 1.6 = $13,400 Can.

Sounds kinda pricey down there. Not sure what i'm going to do at this point. Put in new gaskets and flog it off or rebuild and keep. Would last the wife a long time though...

Depends on how much you like it, how long you can afford to be without it, and how much time you have to rebuild the engine. Were it my truck, I love my truck and could get by without it if I had to. I would also be very motivated to get parts and rebuild it quickly. So I would get a new set of bearings, new oil pump, timing chain, gasket set, and a set of those fun 18:1 pistons (although I might also call up my favorite piston manufacturer and see what they could do for me in a set of 18:1 pistons), and throw the engine back together. If you just want to throw it back together on a really tight budget then get 4 used stock pistons (surely there are those who have some and would be willing to part with them pretty cheaply), pull the 4 offending rods/pistons, swap pistons, and put everything back together.

I'm pretty certain my truck has a piston issue. It has a clacking that sounds like a piston slap, so not a big deal. Has had that noise since I bought the thing. 30,000 hard miles later (173,000 total miles), still runs great. Course, I never pulled the heads nor do I plan to until a running issue comes up that appears to be internal.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune. My starter exploded on today (literally, see my other post). Hopefully you'll get it all operational again soon.Edited by: tdupuis

Which pistons burnt? This is the dreaded result of High IAT's and exhaust tempatures. If you've got the space and time it might be a real learning experience to rebuild it yourself. Although 19:1 might be easier to start than 18:1.

These are off a turbo charged I-4. The one above is the #1 cylinder and below is the #4. This shortblock got kicked to the curb instead of rebuilt. The race shop where I came by it probably dropped in a crate engine and had no use for the core.

Cool pics QM, i haven't actually seen the damge for myself and can't seem to get away from work to look during business hours. I'm sure i'll just trash the engine if i'm going to keep the truck. If i keep the truck i'll put in one from that diesel services site, if i decide to sell it probably all it will get is new gaskets and a "sold as is sticker". If i had the time it would be a good experience for me to do the rebuild myself but thats just not possible... Hmmmmm... are their any back yard mechanics near me that would like to have a go at it?

Would seem to me that rebuilt either way is the way to go, just don't know how long the wife would want to drive the truck with being lifted and all, would never be able to sell it and get my money back after doing the engine. With 345,000 km the tranny probably isn't far behind either now...... decisions, decisions.....

On the upside,

Have exhaust coming in for the 2000 truck, 3" down pipe, 4" to the back. Is their any way that running without the muffler could hurt the engine. Will Dmax exhaust fit the undercarriage of my 2000?
