: oversized tires and failed ABS
motocopter 08-27-2004, 06:07 PM For all those who have larger diameter tires and have not calibrated their speedo, how many miles have you driven and have you had any problems with things like the ABS?
A co-worker had that problem about a year and half afterwards with his Dodge. It was interesting and got me curious.
Anything....?
Amric 08-27-2004, 07:42 PM My ABS has never worked. When the OEM tires were on there, I just thought they didn't have enough traction to bring down 6700lbs in a panic stop. Now with the 315s, the same thing happens. I have calibrated the speedo, but it didn't make any improvement. Perhaps the system is designed to skid and then kick in. The problem is as soon as it starts to slide, I instictively let up on the brake and modulate it myself. Perhaps I'm just not be letting it do its thing.
Burner 08-27-2004, 07:55 PM I thought that the ABS and speedo were two different programs?http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif
DLAnderson 08-27-2004, 08:21 PM As I understand they are two separate systems, and are addressed individually. That is what I have been told...
The TrueSpeed from Superlift has two different boxes, one to correct the ABS, the other for the speedo.
Just wish they made one for the LLY...

spaightlabs 08-27-2004, 11:10 PM I upsized tires on an 04 1500 z71, no affect on ABS - did the same on the 2500 d-max, had 2 panic stops in the last 3 months, both 'sketchy - skid, roll, skid, roll, skid, roll, stop....
gardnerteam 08-27-2004, 11:24 PM 73,000 miles on a 02 - tires sizes ran were: 245, 265, 255, 285, 295, 305 all 16", and 245x19.5. ABS worked fine, never failed or threw codes. Speedometer was affected, but made mental correction. No problems with ABS.

On a diesel yes, on a gasser no. With a gasser if you reprogram ECM it will fix speedo and ABS. Same with gear ratio changes.
VFRRider 08-29-2004, 09:46 AM I have 34.5" H2's, but when I tow I go back to the stock tires and rims. Good thing too, as I posted a while back I had a near accident while pulling the 5th, and NEEDED the ABS, which worked and saved my a**. My ABS does not work with the H2's on, and I'm positive I would have wrecked if I had been towing with the H2's.
motocopter 08-29-2004, 05:24 PM VFRrider, can you lock-up your wheels with the H2 tires? If so, that is interesting to think about. Guess that is how you know the ABS doesn't work with the 34.5" tires. That being the case, I wonder at what diameter of tire the ABS becomes ineffective.
