Cool. What brand and where did you get the tank and horn? I have a similar plan.

Thanks,

homehandyman,

Nice install, How long is the horn? As much as I wanted to mount my Hadley's up there, they just wouldn't fit. Your compressor and tank are mounted about the same location as my stuff. I think mine are a little more hidden since I have the factory step bars.

I had some pictures posted somewhere on my install (could find 'em if any interest exists). The horns themselves are on the opposite side of the bed as the fuel fill door (inside of coursehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif). They certainly aren't much quieter mounted there than they would be up front. . . it's a great place if anyone is considering horns. Plus you don't have to run the air line as far if you mount your tank and compressor on the passenger side under the rear door. JMO.

The horn is a Groover Fire Truck Horn. It is About 36 inches. I mounted it under the front bumper. There was a nice open area. The compressor is a Viair 350. The tank is a Viair 2.5 gallon. I put a air chuck on it so I can air all my tires and also use it with a blow gun and to blow the kids balls up while camping. I put a 150 psi relief valve on it however the celonoid (unknown spelling) is 80-110psi. I wired it to my factory horn button an put in a swith so I can switch between the air horn and the factory horn. I took a battery box for trailers and cut it down. This is what is around the compressor. When I put the cover on you can not see the compressor. The only thing that is real visalble right now is the air tank. I was thinking of painting it black then you would not see it.

hhm,

Seems like you made your own system almost the same as came with the Hadleys I got. Great work. One thing I noticed about the compressor that came with mine was that it was supposed to be mounted with free airflow to combat heat. Hopefully you won't have any problems with heat buildup in the battery box, but that is a great idea. . . . I doubt anyone will really see the tank anyway, but you could also make a bracket or some sort of sleeve to wrap it in, which would also protect it from any rocks or stuff that might be thrown up under the truck.

You can not see but the back top of the battery box is higher then the frame which allows air to circulate. My bad picture taking. for the airline I used plastic ice maker line which has a psi of 150.

Okay, good. It's kind of hard to get pictures that show everything. I tried to get some in the same area, I feel your pain.

Nice overall system you made up. If you don't mind, what did everything set you back?

Thanks,
Dennis

I have had the horn for about 15 yrs but if I recall it was $100.00. The rest was recently purchased, airtank was $40.00. The compressor $175.00, the celonoid was for the air tank and the one for the horn were about $70.00. Misc fittings and hose around $20.00

How many toots can you get off the 2.5 gallon tanks? I have the Viair 5 gallon tank, but its been a bit large to mount. On the old truck (F350) there was a ton of room to mount it up, but its proving a challenge on the new one.

The horns can be had cheap at truck junkyards.

Compressors can be had for decent prices on ebay. Do a search for Viair. A company called Team Pneumatic sells the Viair compressors on their ebay store. They have great prices.

A lot more then I use to. I had 1 gallon tank with a regulator on it and would get 12 sec's of horn without the compressor kiciking in. This new set up I left the regulator off and it being a bigger tank I get a lot longer without the compressor coming on. For awhile I thougt there was no power to the compressor and then it kicked on.

Watch where you mount your air compressors, they are very vulnerable to water and the elements.

TEXMudder,

Where are you thinking about mounting your tank? There are several locations I can think of that would work great. . .

Not sure on this truck. On the F350 I had it on outside the frame rails on the passenger side with plenty of room to spare. It wont fit on this truck there. There was a post about a month ago where one guy had it in front of the passenger side rear wheel. Looks like a nice place to mount things, I am just not sure my tank will fit up there. Havent had time to do any testing to see if it will.

Those might have been my pics. Not sure. Here's a link so you can see where they are. . .

Actually from reading that post, the person who has his tank up in that spot is HD-Nate. I just need some free time to get out and start working on mine.

Homehandyman has an awesome setup.

Saw one on Ebay with 1 gal air tank for a start bid of $225 or so. The lister selling it also has a website listing the units around $350 or so.

My tank and compressor are on the passenger side outside frame below the cab. I also wired a relay that only comes on when the ign. is on. My old setup some times leaked and the compressor would fire up and drain the battery.

hhm,

I did the same thing, and added two switches. One for the compressor itself, so I could turn it off regardless of tank pressure. One for the horns. I triggered the horns off the relay in the underhood fuse block, so that when you hit the horns, both the stock horns and the air horns go off. You can't even hear the stock horns, but if the air horns fail for any reason or I turn them off, then all you have is the stock horns. The tank pressure and compressor cycle is controlled by pressure switch (supposedly 110-150, but actual I'm getting about 100-140). Horns are controlled by solenoid valve. Pretty much the same setup as yours. For wiring I used a trailer brake harness setup which had a 4 wire flat pack. I wired into the MBEC C-8 port and used the 30 amp 'Hot at all times' for the compressor (which is why I put the extra switch in, for leaks) and that way the horns and everything work all the time in case I want to show someone what they sound like without using the key.

TEXMudder,

I'm with you now. I thought you meant something else. There is quite a bit of room up there for a tank, if you can get it in there. The opening at the bottom isn't as big as the space is under the bed. You might be able to remove the supports at the front of the wheel well and slide the tank forward if it won't go in from the bottom. I looked at a 5 gallon tank that was short but fat and at the time I decided it wouldn't fit, but I hadn't thought about putting it in from the back. . .

If you decide to do it that way, snap a pic or two and post. . .

Thanks,
Dennis

baimpala what did you use for airline?

I just used what came with the Hadley kit. I think it is polyethylene, but I'm not 100% sure. It is yellow 1/4" OD. I don't think the kit specified exactly what it was. Sorry. I looked on USPlastics.com, and they have something fairly similar that looks like it would fit the bill.

I also wrapped it in the spiral wrap stuff you can buy at Wal-Mart or wherever to protect it a little better from chafing and the like.

It was bugging me not knowing how much air I have in my tank so I attached an air pressure guage.

I just installed an electronic air horn, the kind used by police and ambulances. Whelan 100 watt speaker fits nicely behind the front grill.
