I followed a link on one of the posts to a Dodge form were they were talking alot of crap about the Dmax. One thing they were saying was the Dmax does not have the engine life of the Cummins. So I just wanted to see how many miles people have on there trucks becouse I just dont buy it..

Thanks

What good does it do to have an engine that goes 300K when you are lucky to get 100K out of the rest of the truck? I wish I had my digital camera with me today, I saw a "newer" Dodge diesel with LOTS of rust on the upper fender wells and door bottoms. Not to mention the missing wheel studs.

2001 K3500 78K HARD miles

Estimates

** I estimate that 40K miles have been towing to Las Vegas and Arizona in 100+ degree heat with a 11Klb trailer attached

** I estimate 10K miles towing boat to various lakes.

** The rest would be moving engines, parts, peoples personal belongings ETC. Very seldom is the truck just cruising around back and forth to work empty.

Another note for anyone interested...Checked the brakes last week. Still have about 1/2 left. Still running the factory pads.... I might get 100K on the original pads...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

On Edit, Just came back from Fresno this weekend as I moved a Belt sander, Bandsaw and drill press out to a shop. I took my time and only went 65 MPH or so knowing I was going to stay the night and fish in the morning..... When I filled up I averaged 17.3 MPG....AMAZING!!!Edited by: Duramax Dually

I put 58k on the 02 I just traded in. I have a '03 Dodge short bed reg cab 1500 Laramie with a Hemi, every factory option. Its a fun truck but the ride is positively miserable compared to GM. I never understood the brand loyaly thing. I mean from my perspective as long as its one of the big 3 its all right by me. This is the first time in 20+ years I have not had a Ford in the drive way. I did talk to another max owner on a tractor forum that had like 188k on his max. Isn't the cum a part a 6 cylinder ????

Have about 30k miles on an '03. Plan on keeping it for a number of years if everything goes according to plan.

Hasn't had much go wrong. Stupid air temp. sensor makes some noise in the morning as others have found. They said they fixed it but they didn't. Haven't had it back yet to have addressed.

Don't have secondary fuel filter yet but am very careful about what and where I buy. It's only seen premium diesel since the first fill, not that that's likely making a big difference with clean fuel but hopefully the Canadian stuff is more like the European regarding cleanliness! I asked Sunoco about what their fuel was rated at (at the pump) a while back but their response just went around in circles to put it politely...

The 2001(76000miles) is going in for service tomorrow...I am really nervous....this truck has never seen a dealer except for oil changes and tech II reflashes.

Reason for going to dealer tomorrow.(this truck is always pulling a 12000lb trailer or stuck in the mud) Oh yea its a 3500 crew cab.

1. Service engine soon light is on...supposedly I need glow plug relay.

2. Spongy brakes and slight steering shutter

3 oil change lube etc

4. fuel filter change

5.Rotate tires (45ooomiles on michelins)

Wish me luck.....http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif

Is there anything else you guys think I should have the dealer do?

154,000 on my '01 Duramax.

I often see and speak with Cummins owners that have 1/2 million or more miles. One fellow told me about, but did not show me his 'other' truck. It had a bad crankshaft but that Cummins also had 1.1 million miles on it.

Dodge does have some drivetrain problems but the Cummins is NOT one of them. I think for long-term reliability the Cummins in-line 6 cyl. is inherently a better motor than the Duramax.

The cummins engines tend to have a great "life to overhaul rating".

They do however have all sorts of problems just like most any engine. Few of the folks here on the board have seen repair bills like the Dodges that I work with. A couple of them probably have Captainmal beat. It seems like the late 80s, early 90s models were the ones that really held up. The ones 96 and up that I have dealt with personally have been nothing to brag about. --SS

Bought new in Feb 03. New water pump at 10,500, no other driveline problems. Multiple electrical gremlins. 20,600 miles as we speak. 7,000 pulling the camper, 3,000 pulling equipment around and the rest driving back and forth to work. Might have it paid off by 120,000 miles.

Just about 22K. No problems at all. Where's Broker and his large numbers? No one knows, yet, whether these engines will last as long as a Cummins. The only significant threat to long life seems to be the injectors, which may or may not be naturally suicidal. The bottom end seems as stout as any, at least I haven't heard of any letting go. Give us all time.

Purchased April 2002. I now have 25K mi.

Minor problems. At 7871 mi the SES light was on. The Stealership replaced the IAH relay. I also had them look at the stereo...the clock would reset intermitantly on its own. They replaced the stereo. At 20K mi I decided to use the cassette player with my MP3 and it doesn't work. I figured they may not have connected all the cables.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif Both front door lock slider plates would fall off everytime the doors were closed. Repaired by recall.

The trans use to grab right before I would come to a stop. Changing to TranSynd fluid seems to have eliminated this problem. Shifts smooth as silk.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

These are just rough calculations. I realize you might have had the truck over a year already. Although not much over a year.

I just threw these numbers together for fun. Some of them could obviously be off by quite a bit.

That is crazy BROKER.

300,000 miles in 1 year.

300,000/365days in a year.

821 miles a day. Average 60 miles per hour (high estimate)

That truck is on the road almost 14 hours a day if he drives EVERY day of the year! Where do you find your drivers? http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif

Averaging 20 miles per gallon (VERY high since your pulling) That's ~40 gallos of fuel a day. At a cost of $2 per gallon $80 a day fuel. In a year each one of those trucks burn in excess of 15,000 gallons or $30,000 a year in fuel!

If you change your fuel filter and oil at 10,000 miles you would be changing them every ~12 days.

Obviously you don't change your diff gear oil ever 500 miles of towing http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif

These are some pretty fascinating claims broker. I am not saying that you are lying. I just thought it would be neat to see some of these #'s.

http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif

Just curious, what kind of $$$$ do you get for a year old truck with 300,000 miles on it?Edited by: Max Power

BROKER
11-08-2003, 05:16 PM
Your calcs are good.Trucks are team driven.Your fuel # are way off. Downhill with a tailwind and drafting a 18wheeler we may get 9mpg loaded.

Depending on the make or milage the trucks bring $6-9000.00 at auction. The trucks that do the Canadian runs get miles on them fast. Also those trucks are in worse shape than the south bound rigs.Canadian winters are hard on them.

Max Power
11-08-2003, 06:14 PM
I knew my fuel milages were off. I just figured it out to 20mpg as if the truck was running empty getting the best fuel milage possible. Too many variables. In all reality you could probably double what I calculated as far as the fuels costs.
