Well, is it possible?

Anything is possible. I'd buy a gear vendors overdrive with a SM465 first. Easier and probably cheaper.

Will the GM ZF bolt up to the 6.2 was more what I was shooting for an answer to...

I believe it has the same mounting bolt pattern as other Chevy V-8's.

I don't think so, why would you want the ZF anyway? I would trade my ZF for my old cast iron Granny Overdrive that was in my 1992 Chevrolet anyday.

Do any of you guys know if it is possible for a old four speed to bolt up to a duramax. I am thinking about building a sled truck out of an 87 1 ton I have and thought that it would be cheaper and maybe stronger to put an old sm465 behind it. This is a far off project just trying to get some ideas sorted out as workable ideas or just pipe dreams. The biggest problem I am having right now is finding an engine with all the wiring I need to make the beast run(maybe a pipe dream in itselfhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif).

Out of curiosity...did GM ever put the 4l80e behind a duramax? Because I know that tranny is just an electronicized version of the 700r4, and was put behind a lot of different small and big block gas engines. I know the 700r4 behind my blazer's 6.2 has the same pattern as a gasser and the 6.5TD has the same pattern. It would make sense for a standard chevy SB/BB bellhousing on the back of a Dmax but I'm looking for some sort of confirmation here...

Hold on there partner . . . you've got a thing or two wrong.

So far GM has not put the 4L80-E behind the D-max. There have been rumours about doing nearly that in Suburbans since 2001, but it hasn't happened yet.

A 4L60-E is an electronic version of a 4L60, which is a renamed and improved TH-700R4. A 4L65-E is a high torque derivitive of the 4L60-E used in Escalades, Denalis and Silverado SSs.

A 4L80-E is a decendent of a TH-400 (which was called 3L80 at the very end) with electronic controls, lock-up torque converter and overdrive (none of which the TH-400 ever had) added. It's used in 8600# and higher GVWR vehicles since 1993, and is the only automatic that has been avaiable behind the 6.5TD and the Vortec 7400 (290 HP 454). The 4L85-E is a high torque version of the 4L80-E used behind the Vortec 8100 in 2500 Suburbans, Yukon XLs and Avalanches and 2500 and 3500 Express and Savana Vans. The best bet is that this is the tranny that will see service behind the D-max in Suburbans, when and if that happens.

The part you've got right is they all, including the ZFS6-650 and the Allison 1000, have the same bolt pattern.

Exchanging manual trannys gets more complicated because there the clutch, flywheel and transmissin input shaft / pilot bearing (or bushing) to consider. Can an S6-650 be made to work with a 6.2, I have no idea.

Can an SM-465 be used behind a D-max, I kinda doubt it becasue I doubt the boss exists to attach mount the clutch linkage on the block, but I could be wrong. (The ZF uses a slave cylinder internal to the bellhousing).

Just to be prefectly clear: Yes, the D-max has a standard Chevy bolt pattern.Edited by: Colorado Kid

I too was looking at a 5 or 6 speed behind a 6.2.

I have put in my 6th TH400 and would really like the extra gear or two.

It was dooable but not at the prices either rebuilders ask or junk yards ask. Guess they won't get my money. The cheapest deal was a new venture for about $1200 but then you have to get bell, flywheel clutch, and rig up the foot pedal.
