is 5" in front of the axle to far forward for a longbed?

For a B&W? If so then no that is where it should go. In fact that is where it has to go!

the reason i was asking was for that. a friend of mine had his installed professionally. they cut that cross member out.

If it was a B&W, then I guess they are professional hacks rather than installers. Too bad, all they had to do was read the instructions.

I am just worried that the goosneck will sit to close to the truck. I dont want to rip off a bed corner.

I have a shortbed and mine is 4" in front. They are the same from the wheelwells to the tailgate. So you will be fine they are basically in the same spot, you just have an extra foot and a half between the hitch and the cab.
