I've been working with a group of ex- Bosch engineers on various projects including engine dyno tuning/parts testing and evaluation. One of there projects is trying to put the Dmax in the boat market. They are in Miami right now for the big boat show with this motor pictured below. This thing is very sweet in person.

Those are water cooler headers, dual wall SS, the turbo is water cooled as well. Dyno'd a very conservative 400 hp at 3k RPM.

Wish I could take credit for that masterpiece, but I just drooled all over it when I seen it last week

Pretty cool, Eric. I think those pics will give the guys building the Dmax headers some ideas....

Different oilpan, too.

Me like the headers.

Thats the commercial version per say, 400 hp. We have talked about what it takes to make bigger power etc, but they also have to make sure it lives. The customer with the budget will make that call I guess.

That oil pan is from the H2's, much cleaner look then the truck pans

I'd like to see a pair of these in a twin screw Donzi ZR 38 or 43. Those twin 525 Merc's drink way too much fuel.

They would really shine in a cruiser that currently has BBC engines.:D

I'm guessing these engines will be a direct drop-in for the BBC, much like the many 6.5L re-power engines on the market for boats.

Eric, got a link or something to this company?

That oil filter would be a PITA to change with the engine/s installed, you'd want to install a remote filter.

Question, why is the power steering pump still there?

Trim tabs? Also probably just as esay to leave it then to take it off and have to gear up an idler pulley.

Not a huge boat expert, but the boat I owned a few years back had a p/s pump on it, used it for....steering controls.

I dunno what the larger boats use or anything, but its a generic engine right now. Target consumer is the boat OEMs that will install it in production units.

That is very cool. I wondered how long it would take for someone to get on the ball with this. Yanmar needs some competition and this could be it.

More companies are going to strictly hydraulic setups and will use alternative pump setups to get the power steering pumps off the motors now. Race boat applications are perfect examples of this. They have a pump setup not run by the motors and a resovoir for the fluids.

Good luck to them, I hope they are successful.

It will be hard to get the boat builders to step away from their current engine builders. They'll be selling against some pretty big names; Cummins Mercruiser, Volvo Penta, Yanmar, and CAT. Just to name a few.

They would likely be much more successful in the repower market, like Peninsular is with the 6.5L. Just a thought though.

I'd buy a pair of these way before 6.5's if I was doing a repower.

Are they getting these engines straight from GM? I figured Crusader would jump on the Duramax band wagon first to compete with Cummins Mercruiser. I just figured that GM wasn't releasing any engines to other manufacturer's yet.

i have been around boats all my life....yes i totally agree that the boating scene needs to get on the ball with high performance diesels as a power plant in some of the speed boats...my family has a fountain 38 lightning with twin 500efi's pushing like 600hp a piece... and they are gas guzzling hogs....plus to see a nice cigarette boat take off blowin black smoke out would be ****...not so shur the dnr would love them but i would deff look into it if buying a marine technology's cat or a skatter and having to put a power plant into it..or two or three...as i recall the dmax has the same bell housing bolt pattern as almost all other gm motors too and would bolt right up to a bravo xr drive or arnison surface drives....hope they get this into a boat soon i would like to see some completed pictures

There is a pair of highly modified duramaxs installed in a MTI 44' with a Trimax surface drive. Currently being tested in Florida.

Exergy Engineering does the LB7 (was with Eric by Exergy) DieselPerformance Research does the LLY, thats why I have the LLY nozzles first :D.

That's it, pretty sweet. Gotta be a fun ride and way better mileage and pull than a gas motor.

Exergy is using the LLY, the pics are an LLY. Also looking at plans to use the LBZ engines. GM is not the best to deal with though....

We have a 50' Gibson Houseboat with twin 454's. Twin Duramax's would just be awsome...More power and gas mileage!

What do you think it woud cost to purchase 2 Marine Duramax's like that? I would bet that you could buy alot of gas! Although, the boat get 0.5 miles to the gallon  ...
