I have recently bought a 1998 Suburban 2500 and the airbag light is on. The PO said that he hit a light in a parking lot and dented the bumper and the air bags deployed. He replaced the bumper and the air bags but the light is still on and a body shop tech told him that a scan tool would need to be used to perform a reset of the system and that would remedy the light. Is that true ? Also the code is SIR 26 what is that ? How can I remedy the light being on ? I have a Tech 2 but I am not very familiar on using it for the SIR system. Thanks for any help. Davis

On your 98, when the airbags deploy, they typically send a DTC B1051. That will keep the airbag light on even after the bags are replaced. The manual states: DTC B1051 is a latched code. You cannot clear a latched code. Replace the SDM after following the instructions in the diagnostic table. I am not sure what the SIR 26 code you have is, but if your bags deployed, you will need to replace the SDM before your bags will function properly and the light to go out.

Thanks for the reply. Do you have an idea of the SDM cost ? Also where is it located ? Thanks Davis

It mounts under the driver's seat on the floor. It has a metal housing. A new 1 is approx. $350, but used ones for that year can be bought pretty cheap. Just make sure the used 1 came from a vehicle that did not deploy the airbags, and make sure the part number matches your old one. Also make sure the used 1 shows no signs of corrosion or water. Buy it from a reputable person who will guarantee it.

I checked the codes again today for the air bag light and it is a "B1026 SIR 26 current" . That is what is displayed on my scan tool. I don`t have a service manual for this vehicle so can someone tell me what this code means ? Thanks Davis

I have finally gotten around to removing the air bag from the steering wheel. I have checked for continuity from the base of the steering column to the plug that goes to the air bag module.Everything checks out ok. I also placed a jumper wire across the plug that goes to the air bag and checked the drivers side VDIF on the scan tool and it went down like it should be . I checked continuity at the base of the steering column with the air bag in place and it was good. So I don`t know what else to check without having to take it to a dealer and I really would like to avoid that.Any suggestions would be appreciatede. Thanks Davis

Why don't you try clearing the code, and then check for codes again after a few start cycles. This way you will know if it is a current code. Also check your connections at the SDM.
You might still need another SDM without deployment history to get the airbag light to go out.

Hey 236ek,
I have cleared the codes many times while plugging and unplugging the two airbags. And other codes would set when I had the pass side air bag unplugged then when I reconnected the plugs the B1026 would always show back up. I have not replaced the SDM . I guess that is my next thing to do. Thanks Davis

Davis, check for continuity all the way to the SDM connector. There should be continuity from the white wire at the module to the white wire @ pin 2 on the SDM connector, and then from the dk green wire to the dk green wire @ pin 3 SDM.
