We have all read Spicer's excellent thread and work concerning the drop in air filters and their respective flow and filtration properties. BUT little was said about the conical filters and the intake kits they come with. Do these kits really improve performance? Has anyone out there tried the AFE intake kit? If so what were the results?

I think the pipe does add something above just the filter. The stock pipe has a flex section that adds turblence. Not only does the AFE pipe eliminate this and the intake muffler, but it also has a more consistent area throughout its length.
In addition to the pipe advantages, the surface area of the conical filter is much larger than the OEM airbox filter as long as the pleat count per inch is similar between the two.
Or it has 3 layers of tite foamhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif. Only problem is Uni don't make a tube just the cone filter. I put mine on a K-N tube wish I had one of them shinny chrome tubes.

Now what do you suppose would be the filtering efficientcy of a conical AFE proguard 7 filter vs. the rectangular drop in proguard 7? Greater or worse? Since we could reason that the velocity of the air passing through the conical filter would be less then the drop in filter, due to the fact that the conical filter has a greater surface area (Total CFM with large area/low veocity = Total CFM with small area/high velocity) Would there be an increase in filter efficientcy with a larger surface area?

At one of our Dyno days we took HP and TRQ readings on a stock intake truck and then swapped out the intake for a AFE stage 2 intake system and retested the truck still strapped to the same dyno and there was NO improvement.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif
The truck was stock so there might be an improvement at higher HP levels http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif but none noted at the typical stock numbers.
BUT it sure does make that turbo whistle sound louder.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
Mack or some of the others present that day can confirm if I'm remembering correctly or not.

The factory box is rather large for stock HP, and it doesn't take much to pull 50% more air than stock through the intake with a big box or tuner.
Has anyone running 400+rwhp (or 28+psi) compared the stock intake against an aftermarket conical filter and pipe?

I posted these results once before and got some crap for it. So please note the following disclaimer: This is just my personal experience you results may vary based on truck, dyno, testing procedures etc. I'm just sharing information. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif
In Feb. of this year, with my ATS trans, Banks Exhaust, no cat, Big head actuator and a HJAT on level 5 w/max low boost fueling. A back to back test of my factory intake system with a Uni filter against an AFE stage 2 was conducted on a Superflow dyno. Averaging a series of three pulls for each system with the hood open. The AFE stage 2 non proguard showed an approx. 18 hp improvement peak to peak.

Trippin- Thats impressive. I figured there would be a definate EGT drop, but not much if any HP gain. Do you have the graphs?

I'll have to dig them up, it's been a while.
