I recently arrived in Las Vegas by way of Interstate 15 from Barstow. I was towing a 12.5k 5th wh trailer, 3k pin weight.

There is a 25 mile grade at about 6-8%. About half way up the engine temp went to 235-240, and at about 3/4 up the trans went to 260, and the warning system came on telling me "Trans Oil Hot".

I only drove a few more miles to the top of the grade at these temps but don't know if anything was damaged. Truck runs great but am concerned about the high temps.

This is the only time this has happened, even tho I have gone over some mountains at greater grades.

Any body else have this happen, and should I be concerned.

You need to clean the bugs out of your radiators. If both are getting hot, they are more than likely stopped up.

I will check, but I usually keep it clean.

If the radiator was full of bugs, wouldn't it run hot on all hills????

Thanks

Well, there are alot of coolers in the front. If one in the middle is stopped up, it will be hard to see. Air will go through your first if it is not stopped up, but how much better will air flow if it can go straight through. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif That is what I am thinking. It won't run hot on all hills-IMO, but when you are going up a 6-8% grade for 25 miles with a gross weight around 20k, it will. Edited by: dmaxfan
