I'm new to the diesel world but love it so far. I just bought a 86 Suburban 4X4 with 6.2L. http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Rock%20On.gif I had the TH700 Tranny thats in it rebuilt so thats squared away for awhile. My question is about the engine. It has 200,000 miles on it. It starts immediatly, doesn't smoke very much and seams to pull the truck around fine. But at low RPM it's makes a rakkity rack sound that in a Gas engine would mean a rod is about to shoot through the hood. Is this something I should be worried about or is it normal for this engine?

Should be a fair amount of detonation clatter for sure, your timing could be a touch advanced, but if you retard it to make it idle quieter you would most likely suffer considerable power loss and see white smoke out the tail pipe. The only other thing to check is the HPCA solenoid on top of the pump, that will be the one towards the rear of the top cover, beside the return fitting, its a lighter wire than the shutoff solenoid. It should only be energized while the engine is cool, same as the fast idle solenoid. Get the engine warm and unplug it to see if it makes a difference, if it does then either figure out why its hot all the time (usually a temp sender bad) or just leave it unplugged.
