How would I tap into the "RAP" (Retained Accessory Power)? I would like to switch the cig lighter to be on RAP so that I can hook up my radar detector to it.
Thanks in advance

What kind of truck do you have?

If you have a new one '03 and up, you can just run wires from the MBEC to the lighter and you're all set. I can provide more details if that's what you have and if that sounds acceptalbe (I'm not a tech, BTW).

You can just rewire the cigarette lighter from the MBEC (Mid-Bussed Electrical Center). There are a couple of options. Or you could just run your radar detector wire under the dash and wire it directly into the MBEC. That would free up your cigaretter lighter for other things.

Hey thanks for the info. Now the next question since I don't know where the MBEC is and how to find and connect to the RAP portion of it. WHere is it and how do I find and connect to the RAP portion?
Thanks for being so patient with me.

This link will take you to an excellent .pdf document that will detail exactly what you need to know to connect your radar detector. I used it extensively when I hooked up the air horns.

Good luck, and don't worry about asking questions, that's what this forum is all about. I guarantee you can't ask a question as stupid as some of the ones I've asked.

Another option is to find a circuit in the fuse box that is hot when the key is off and use a LittleFuse FHM200 Add-A-Circuit to tap it.

jbplock,

I knew there was something I was forgetting! That's how I wired my gauges. Went off the left hand fuse block inside the driver's door, tapped off the Rear Windshield Wiper fuse.

Thanks,
Dennis

Thanks for that page it looks like it will be very helpful.
I have a question on if/where I can get the SEO Connector (c-8, page C-1)? It looks like on that connector cavity D (yel wire) might be what I want.

or as an alternative:

When you hooked into the Rear Windshield Wiper fuse(#6)(page b-10) was that one part of RAP? That one looks like it is the easiest one to get to.

the Rear Wiper isn't RAP, but it is only hot when in ACCY or RUN. Works great. Probably the easiest for you. I bought a connector for the C-8 plug, and it was about 25 bucks and doesn't include fuses. It took a long time to find the connector for the C-8 port (finally did at Rockauto.com).The mini add-a-fuse is like 7 bucks, and comes with a few assorted fuses. Definitely the best bet. I used the Rear Wiper fuse because I could hide the new wires easiest with that one. It's a piece of cake to do that one. I'm glad jbplock mentioned it, as I completely forgot it.

Hey thanks guys. Good points about the C-8 plug and no fuses. The $7 option looks like the best deal and you are right that I really don't need to have it use RAP. Thanks again for the GREAT advice.
