I am having some issues with my 5500, and trying to get the inside of windshield clean is impossible. Ive tried heavy doses of windex, windshield washer fluid in a spray bottle, ammonia, Its like a layer of residue that just smears.
Ive heard that the chemicals etc in the vinyl, dash etc. can cause a "fog" But I cant X it out. Ive used newspaper to dry the windshield( an awsome trick for clean windows) but no avail. Any Ideas?
TIA
Bill

You may need a concentrated oil/grease cutter like liquid dish soap? If you have it handy, you could try something like "Fantastic" Shower Shine....for cleaning showers and tubs. I also use white vinegar for a lot of things. Its pretty good.

Try dish detergent & sponge or towel. Follow with normal windshield cleaner & newspaper or paper towel. If this doesn't work, try a clay bar, but be real careful to keep it lubricated or you may install scratches.

Coke or Scrubbin Bubbles/CLR/Lime Away or something like that. Then clean it with rubbing alcohol...

Will Dr Pepper work as well? I don't have coke. I've been having this problem since day one. For 5 years I've been driving around in a haze and the window is foggy too. :)

DO NOT use anything abrasive!!!!

Go to your local autoparts store and buy some Mothers clay with lubricatant and follow the instructions. It will remove all impurities from the windshield. I have donethis countless time for my customers who work where there is "fallout" from their companies...

Maybe there is a problem with your windshield?? Like the layer of plastic between the two panes of glass is fogged up or something? Did you take it back to the stealer and ask them to try to clean it? Just a thought.

Ammonia's fine on the factory tinted windows, they're chemical treated; its the film tint you've gotta watch out with the ammonia on.

Is this a joke? You've gotta watch what you say; unless you make it obvious you're kidding, someone's not gonna be happy with you some day.

He is talking about the INSIDE of the windshield. I would think trying to use a clay bar on the inside would make one heck of a mess.

I use rain-x windshield cleaner, and it works very well at taking off the film left by the chemicals given off by plastic.

Why would it leave a mess. You do not use a garden hose for lubrication, use a mist from a spray wax, then wipe off the leftover from the dash. As I have said before, I have done this on MANY customers vehicles. I own a detailing and restoration business... If done correctly, there is really no more liquid on the dash then when washing the windows and the spray wax that is used for a lubricant wqill nicely clean the dash.

Also, by far, the best window cleaner is about 10-15% rubbing alcohol mixed with water, and use newspaper. Many times, there is something in the paper towels or rags that is smearing the window. A big mistake most people do is SOAK the window when cleaning. NOT NEEDED, just mist the stuff on and wipe off with newspaper. Sometimes a second cleaning may be needed for smoke. The key is to clean your windows regularly. I simply shake my head at people when they ask me how to get residue off of the inside of windows from the HVAC system, epsecially on GM's. I ask them when the last time they cleaned their glass and they say "duhhh, I do not know"...

Best stuff I've found is Armorall glass cleaner. Had a bottle given to me several years ago and it sat out in the shop. Decided to try it and have been using it ever since. Cuts the crud, doesn't have any tendancy to streak or smear.

I've said this before and I'll say it again!!

Simple green and a clean rag works wonders:D

The trick is not what cleaner you use but what you use to actually clean the window with! I dont care what type of "streak-free" cleaner you use, if you use a soft cloth or soft "kitchen" paper towel, it will streak!

Use Newspaper!!!!!!

Don't know about cleaning glass, but 0000 steel wool is great for shining up chrome or polished SS, followed by a blast of compressed air to get rid of the steel wool crumbs (they rust quick).

I remember seeing this on tv too, but can't remember the show. I have used an sos pad and window cleaner before if the film is bad and never had a problem. Don't push hard on it. Try it on a junk piece first to double check.

Every spring I use Bar-Keepers Friend or Soft-Scrub on the outside glass and it works great ...... make real sure you never use a towel that has been washed with any kind of fabric softener or never use a drier sheet on towels or cloth you use for glass .....

You won't have a streak or speck anywhere. I took my truck to a body shop someone sprayed a propane tank silver next to my truck and this is what they use to get over spray off glass. I thought they were joking so I tried a small spot it worked like a charm, perfect for getting bugs off windshield.

Try Turtle Wax chrome polish..... This will also take off water spots/mineral deposits etc. I learned this from guys at car shows.

Awsome guys,
Thanks for all your replies I am gonna start trying some of your "tricks" and see what happens.
The funny thing is this windshield issue has happened on every truck we bought that sat for a while like 2 months and up, while in the dealer lot, or at an upfitter. I wonder if its just from the truck not being used, or the windshield not being cleaned for that amount of time.
Thanks for all your replies

My guess it is caused by the over abundent use of armor all or other type of vinyl dressing...... that stuff is toxic and when baked in sun emits an oily residue up on to the inner glass ...... my .02$

I have worked with auto glass for 23 years. Glass tinting ,removing all types damaged glass, & installing. A FINE STEEL WOOL "OOO" & WATER WITH A FEW DROP OF DISH SOAP AS A LUBRICANT IN A SPRAY BOTTLE OR WINDEX WORK GREAT!!!!! This is how I have cleaned glass on the inside or outside for glass tinting for years!!!! Or a new razor blade for the sides or front windshield, steel wool only on a rear window defroster. Do not do in direct sun. Do it in the shade when the glass is cool. Then use staight water & a freshly washed terry cloth towel. NO HAZE!!
