: What can get wet?

Tonight I was replacing the thermostat in my '95 6.5 (yes it is starting to get cold up here) and a small amount of coolant squirted out of the housing in the general direction of the Injection pump. I completed the change, started the truck to move it back to cleanup, ran good for about 30 sec then died. It never does that. So I tried to restart - no go. Spun her for a bit and it fired once. Then I put in in gear and held the ingition to run the lift pump, heard it pressure up then it started instantly and ran for about 30 sec again. I repeated this for 3-4 times. The last time I had it running I opened the bleeder on the top of the fuel filter housing and nothing came out. I am sure that the lift pump is not running or intermitant while the engine is running.

My question is: is there anything in the general area around the injection pump that can't get wet that would cause this kind of problem.

Right now I have her in a warm shop with the hood up to dry.

Thanks

I forgot to add that the truck has been running 100% up to now and the lift pump was changed about 25000 miles agoEdited by: Slapshot

OK - scratch that. I figured out the problem. When I was loosening the thermostat bolts, the bracket that holds the water drain valve turned a bit and pinched the line that comes from the filter, bleeding fuel pressure. Fixed that, bled the filter housing and now she is running perfect again. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif

Since you fixed your problem, I'd like to tell a similiar tale with a different outcome. I changed the thermastat in my dad's 96. It's the sideways arrangement, we always laugh nd say GM must have found a better way(my 94 is horizontal). I got finished but it had a bad seal and over the next couple of days leaked hot coolant on the IP. Maybe coinsidense but the liftpump and PMD had to be replaced because It started stalling by the third day.

I wondered if the steam didn't cause the pmd to fail, I can't see how it affected the lift pump.
