what can i do to get more boost for my turbo?

whatnot

Since you want to turn up the fuel and the boost, I would suggest you just buy a chip. (either a Heath or Kennedy) It will do both and probably adjust timing and other stuff to help.

You can do it cheaper but not get as much out of it. If you get the chip first, you can do some of the other stuff mentioned on here after to get a little more.

Guage it too so you can see what your running as you make these changes. EGT and boost guage are essential for damage control. I should have mine in this week. The boost guage was cheap ($27)but the EGT guage and probe can run over $100.

QM, where are you getting your gauges?

I live in BC and checked the local supplier. (BD Power - right here in town) Got a price of CAD $56 for the pillar mounting, $60 for a 30 lb boost and $210 for pyro, for a total of $326 CAD, or about $244 USD.

Seemed a bit pricey to me, but checked Autometer, Kennedy and Banks which which were similar.

What kind of deal did you find on the pyro? Or should I just go with BD?

I got mine from Kennedy. It cost a little more but was worth it for the plug together thermocouple.

I got the Boost guage kit from www.JC_Whitney.com (http://www.JC_Whitney.com) .The probe itself I found at an experimental plane/pilot supply for $22. It's the two piece adjustable 1/4" NPT K type. The guage was a wonderful gift from gmctd and after seeing the same guage alone for $70-$90 I know what it would have cost new. I deceided against the pillar mount for another $60. For $60 I'll make my own.

I'm not allowed to look that far off the road while I'm driving but it's a clean cover up for that stock radio hole. I'm fair to good at most things and I'm going to make a mold and do a three guage a-pilar mount out of fiberglass.

yeah,

This is a family truck and my wife doesn't like to drive(and I do).I'm alone occasionaly and pushing the radio buttons while driving is enough to precipate an accident in Houston's crazy everyday traffic(Where I generly work).

Here's the probe I received today.

The company was aircraft spruce and specialty Co.

PN# EP133 $22 IIRC.

chevy_9465,

How much more boost, do you want? Have you already installed low compression (18:1) pistons and rings? If not, then you already have as much boost as the engine will safely a reliably take. At 21:1 compression ratio, you can't add a whole lot more boost.

The 6.5 TD is not a Ford Powerstroke (International 444) or Dodge Cummins. Trust me, I have a '96 Ford Powerstroke and a '95 6.5 TD Burb, and the Powerstroke is far superior in everyway.

I just wish it was possible to buy a used Ford Excursion Powerstroke, for the measly $7800 I paid for the 6.5TD Burb. Unfortunately, used Excursion still cost around $30,000.

Why can't you run at more boost with stock compression? There are a lot of people that are. (including myself)

You can run a little more boost safely, but you can't run nearly what the Cummins and Powerstrokes can take.

I never thought I would ever hear 18:1 and low in the same sentence.......what is stock compression on a 6.5TD?

quantum mechanic

21.3:1 for '94-'98 19:1 for '99

What are the power ratings from year to year for the 6.5? I havent been able to find a relable source. Also, what is the stock level of boost?

quantum mechanic
08-24-2004, 10:49 PM
power rating were advertised at 185-210 hp (off the top of my head sorry didn't flip the manuel open, but might have been less with all the restrictions they worked into it. The stock level of boost is 2-3 psi at lower load to 6-7psi peak.

chevy_9465,

Have you sodered a 10K ohm fixed resistor in yet on the MAP sensor?

Turbine Doc

I don't think the 210Hp or 19:1 ever made it to production, Jaun while a stock 6.5 isn't a PS or Cummins, take the money saved on the cost and a 6.5 can be made to out do a stock of either and even keep pace with a stock DMax, but as you said once all bells and whistles installed you wind up just above those engines starting point.

chevy_9465,

What are the advantages in doing this?

Turbine Doc

Offsets the output of the MAP sensor to the PCM; fools it into thinking lower boost is being made so PCM does not clip fuel/boost which happens right about the time you need extra boost, with stock programming

it's a inexpensive way to get more power without reflashing/chipping, to do it safely though you need gages boost & EGT at a minimum top know when to back off as without an IC or WMI boost above 7-8 sustained is not a good thing. IAT & EGT get too high

Canada,

It's something I'd recomend after your exhaust has been upgraded to 3" mandrel bent or bigger. Guages are a good idea too.

10K ohms is generly worth 2-3 psi boost increase.

Cool....gauges are a definate.....I'm considering adding boost, EGT, and engine oil temp. GM is fairly good and making gauges that are accurate and respond like they should. So gauges like oil pressure or water temp are out.

Where do you guys typically mount the gauges in the 95+ interior? A-pillar?

Who makes a decent (mandrel bent) turbo-back exhaust? And the turbo cross-over/up-pipe?

Summit Racing has a really inexpensive exhaust crossover kit, which a number of members here have purchased. I haven't got mine yet, so save one for me! Try this URL:

Summit Racing (http://store.summitracing.com/default.asp?target=esearch.asp&N=100&Ntk=PartSearch&Ntt=FLO-17220&x=13&y=9)

Summit, Kennedy, Banks and BD all have gauges, and I've concluded that they're all pretty competitively priced, with the Pyrometer being the most expensive. The most popular mounting system -- if you don't build your own -- seems to be the drivers side pillar.

Pillar post is what I'd recommend go ahead and get the 3 gage setup even if you run blank for a while, I have 3 and want more so I'll be making a setup like GMCTD for the dash in addition to the pilar set, gauges like everything else for these trucks is addictive I NEED (want) MORE http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
