I recently experienced a problem following dealer fuel filter replacement. My truck required priming on three successive mornings following the maintenance, but I was able to tow 260 miles on the first of these days. On days 4 and 5 I did not have to prime.
I hooked up the trailer on day six, loaded gear and horses and headed North from Santa Barbara (or so I thought). Experienced a loss of power almost immediately and barely made it to an off ramp only a few miles down the road. Finally got the truck to a GMC dealer as the Chevy dealer was way to busy to help a transient in trouble. Both the service writer and mechanic spent about an hour working on the truck, checked codes, removed and checked the fuel filter. Other than the "large fuel leak" code and the corresponding data that indicated a low pressure situation (ECM asking for 23,000 psi with only 3,000 psi being generated) everything checked out. The fuel filter did seem to loosen rather easily leading me to wonder if it had been installed correctly.
Does anyone have experience with this condition having been caused by improper (loose) filter installation? Is it possible to have a faulty check valve within the filter? I would appreciate any insight you might have to share.
As an aside I'm going to buy a set of really good wheel chocks. The off ramp was too steep to unhitch and I had to pay a tow company to tow me 300 feet to a level area so I could unhitch and have AAA tow the truck. I was very fortunate to have reached the off ramp as it would have been impossible to unload the horses on the highway should. No one who tows horses can afford many problems like this.
