: Casper RIP: Not with a bang but a wimper.
McRat 02-08-2007, 11:16 AM Our 2005 LLY Dmax "Casper" might have lost a cylinder.
It didn't even happen while driving. Kat drove it, it ran fine. I went to drive it and it wouldn't start at first. I finally got it to start and it idled rough and was smoking white (diesel fuel, STRONG).
I just did a compression test on 6 of 8 cylinders (you can't get #4,#8 with my gauge), and the cylinders were between 295-320PSI except number 3 which was 240. It was a crappy gauge (Mity Vac?), so I need to do it again with a better tool. RickDLance pointed me in the direction of a better gauge.
There are 5 "normal" types of dead cylinders:
Head gasket (it's not using water)
Rod bent
Piston cracked (surprisingly little PCV blowoff)
Injector pushed out of bore (will replace clamp and retest)
Bad valve (rare)
Shortly after California Speedway with the GT42R (119mph pass) it started to make a little white smoke on start, and took longer to crank. We ran it at LACR with no problems except a blown intercooler hose (120.4 mph) and dyno'd it 755rwhp, 1360? TQ.
It ran excellent up until now except for the warm up smoke and the 3 second crank cycles.
The GT42R runs 75 deg hotter EGT's (1625 through lights), makes 80 more RWHP, and runs far higher boost 42 vs. 59 PSI.
Did boost do it? Did HP do it? Did TQ do it? Did EGT's do it? Did it's short brutal life do it?
Not sure.
Since we are taking the engine out in about 2 weeks to put the new one in, I'm not going to tear into it right now, well, except to perhaps replace the injector hold down on #3.
My theory that we would be immune to engine failure if we just ran fuel is probably not true.
I will do the autopsy to find out why, but I felt I must warn those of you running (or contemplating) big #2 HP of my experience.
Well, at least I probably didn't wreck the cores. Good night Engine #1, you were alot of fun, and will be missed.
GMC2500HD 02-08-2007, 11:22 AM Very sorry to hear that man, hope you get it fixed soon and back on the track.
banshee42096 02-08-2007, 11:25 AM is that a warranty issue:rolleyes: .casper has been abused took it like a big boy though.
McRat 02-08-2007, 11:26 AM PS - Someone is spreading a rumor that Casper is on it's second engine. This is not true. It had the oil pump fall apart at 3000+ RPM and 42PSI and go instantly to zero oil pressure. It creamed the charger, but the engine was was not replaced, just the oil pump.
The engine has over 250 (way over) 1/4 passes, a few sled pulls, hundreds of dyno pulls, several bottles of nitrous, 14 turbochargers, and perhaps 200 different tunes run on it. It just kept getting meaner until it took Kat home safely, and layed down to rest.
RickDLance 02-08-2007, 11:28 AM Yeah, I'd say Casper has been through the mill WAY MORE than most. No offense Pat.:)
McRat 02-08-2007, 11:29 AM Very sorry to hear that man, hope you get it fixed soon and back on the track.
We've been working on a new engine for it for a couple of months. Should be up and running very shortly.
IdahoRob 02-08-2007, 11:31 AM Sorry to hear that Pat.
Seems you were kind of looking forward to this in a demented sort of way.:D
Thanks for the testing and letting us know the limits. Keep us informed, hope it's something easy
fast03 02-08-2007, 11:34 AM Sorry for your loss Pat.:( They always run really great right before they go. I cannot wait to see the new engine run.
John LegionST 02-08-2007, 11:39 AM Sorry to hear it but at least there is a new engine on the horizon!
What kills me is that "Casper" has probably had a harder life than any one of our trucks and probably has the least miles! LOL (I think I remember reading somewhere that it had pretty low miles! Cant rack 'em up that fast if it's only .25 mile at a time! LOL)
Good luck with engine #2, cant wait to see more from You and "Casper" in the future!
ecc_33 02-08-2007, 11:40 AM RIP..Caspers first engine will be missed greatly:)
Now its time to really put a hurtin on those dodges
McRat 02-08-2007, 11:43 AM Sorry to hear that Pat.

When the oil pressure went to zero, we thought that was it, and assumed it would blow any minute, but we kept dialing it up anyhow. :D
In a way, I'm glad we took it to the point of injury before replacing it. If it would have lasted another couple weeks we would have taken it out anyways, and if there was no injury, I would have assumed 750hp is safe.

If that's not a "glass 1/2 FULL" statement, I dont know what is! We could only be so lucky to have a member on here that is happy that his truck broke early enough for him to learn something! LOL Thanks Pat!
Diesel Power 02-08-2007, 02:07 PM Thanks for sharing the info Pat.. These stock motors will never live forever at those HP #'s but it lasted longer than I had guessed.. Good luck on the new motor!
porterz 02-08-2007, 02:36 PM Thanks from all us wannabes out here too. We see you and strive to follow in your shadow. ;) Keep rocking, and sorry for your loss.
SaguaroKid 02-08-2007, 02:56 PM Poor Girl, sounds like she just kinda gave up the Ol' ghost..
Poor Boy, sounds like he just kinda gave up the Ol' ghost..
Fixed it for ya ):h
BIGBLOCKBILL 02-08-2007, 03:48 PM Pat,did you check for a misfire code? That's how I found #8 piston was cracked on my truck. Same symptoms your having, white smoke, rough idle, very little blow by,ect. Seems like I had an injector sticking causing too much fuel to be injected into one cylinder.
Bolyard 02-08-2007, 04:00 PM I'm optamistic, I think hes just got the flu. I hope its something little that can be easy to fix
00sierra 02-08-2007, 04:11 PM What are your plans for the new motor? Of course rods and heads, but are you going to keep the gt42r on him and just try and add some more fuel?
McRat 02-08-2007, 05:40 PM Pat,did you check for a misfire code? That's how I found #8 piston was cracked on my truck. Same symptoms your having, white smoke, rough idle, very little blow by,ect. Seems like I had an injector sticking causing too much fuel to be injected into one cylinder.
No misfire codes.
ZR1160 02-08-2007, 05:52 PM I still say that once a second CP3 goes on without stronger rods, you life span is limited, but your sure got some good use out of that block:D , I liked reading about what you did with a stock motor, and can hardly wait to see what you do with a built one:D
billygoat7c 02-08-2007, 06:02 PM are you going to be rebuilding the old motor for a spare? :D
McRat 02-08-2007, 06:07 PM What are your plans for the new motor? Of course rods and heads, but are you going to keep the gt42r on him and just try and add some more fuel?
We are building an engine with the tech support of Guy Tripp at SoCalDiesel, the goal is reliable operation at a given HP level, and will monitor the engine on a routine basis.
The GT42R provides plenty of air at this point and did not exhibit boost fade at all going through the traps at 3500rpm. It is EPA Clean Air Approved at 750HP, and needs more fuel. :D
Dieselson 02-08-2007, 06:14 PM RIP Casper, I will miss you, but I can't wait to see the debut of casper on engine #2, which is #2 only hopefully. I think its the gaskets, just because the head bolts were stock, and you were running 59 psi. I am striving for the point were a stock engine would last for two runs and a drive home. :)
McRat 02-08-2007, 06:32 PM I will be surprised if it's a head gasket, normally they won't lose that much compression, but I suppose it's possible.
redneckbuckeye 02-08-2007, 06:44 PM I think we should have a moment of silence, and maybe someone could say a few nice words. Nate
jmg343 02-08-2007, 06:52 PM RIP Casper. Dont take it to heart Pat, Casper died an honorable death. And, if it makes you feel any better, Anna Nicole Smith died too, with a few more drugs ran through her and a bunch more miles.
RickDLance 02-08-2007, 06:54 PM And, if it makes you feel any better, Anna Nicole Smith died too, with a few more drugs ran through her and a bunch more miles.
That just ain't right, right there.):h
McRat 02-08-2007, 06:55 PM I need to reinterate that this thread was posted prematurely. I was going to wait until we found out what failed before posting just in case it is just a pushed injector or blown headgasket.
moss022 02-08-2007, 06:56 PM what a hard life! how long did it have 2cp3's on? sounds like if done/used right, a motor could last a desent time on one pump
THAMAX 02-08-2007, 07:08 PM I think smith had a much rougher life than casper did. I still can't believe your motor lasted that long at 59 psi of boost thats insane
Thank you for sharing. I love reading about what this truck has done and look forward to seeing what it will do in the future!
Fingers 02-08-2007, 09:05 PM Sounds like you shortened some rods there Pat.
BIGBLOCKBILL 02-08-2007, 09:46 PM No misfire codes.
How about injector balance rates? I'm just curios if this was an injector induced failure or a good old-fashioned beatin failure?:D
redneckbuckeye 02-08-2007, 10:01 PM I am sure Anna was rode harder and more often than casper, but casper had a better quality of life.:D
Nate

Dunno yet. I wanted to work on the truck more, but it was my son's birthday. I was going to look everything over this weekend and post about it, but false rumors and insults were flying so I posted this thread to squash the potty mouths.
Guess I will have egg on my face if it's something simple. :(
McRat 02-08-2007, 10:04 PM I am sure Anna was rode harder and more often than casper, but casper had a better quality of life.:D
Nate
Yeah, too bad Casper won't get $400 million for sucking a rod...
:D
66flh 02-08-2007, 10:07 PM It sure was a fun ride to read about?More to come hopefully!
Bolyard 02-08-2007, 10:08 PM Yeah, too bad Casper won't get $400 million for sucking a rod...

I hope it is something simple so casper can continue it's thrash fest on the stock bottom end.:)
BTW,PM sent Pat.
GMC-2002-Dmax 02-08-2007, 10:34 PM Thanks for testing the stock Duramax Engine........I think you surpassed 400 RWHP on Stock internals a while back...........
I am surprised it lasted as long as it did as well.
Good Luck,
OneTALLGMC96 02-08-2007, 10:57 PM Good work Pat...she did pretty good for a long time.
malibu795 02-08-2007, 11:10 PM nice job pat:thumb: im eager too see waht the next chapter brings :bounce:
coldLBZ 02-08-2007, 11:17 PM I guess it's time for a heart transplant for casper. Sorry to hear that, but atleast it didn't scatter 100 miles from home or anything like that.
Fingers 02-08-2007, 11:51 PM Hate when THAT happens. BTDT :)
fredw 02-09-2007, 01:43 AM sad to hear your luck pat.... now thats why you were a bit crabby on the phone, lol
TrailerproPop 02-09-2007, 03:59 PM Hate when THAT happens. BTDT :)
I remember that too.:lol2:
Good luck to both of you on your rebuilds, and your information sharing has been priceless to the Duramax "family"
mrsdmaxallitech 02-10-2007, 02:59 PM :( Sorry to hear about Casper, but I'm sure the next one will be greater!
SBCNX20 02-10-2007, 10:46 PM RIP Casper. Dont take it to heart Pat, Casper died an honorable death. And, if it makes you feel any better, Anna Nicole Smith died too, with a few more drugs ran through her and a bunch more miles.

That's too funny, I just spit water all over my keyboard :D
TIM Z 02-11-2007, 09:58 PM I guess its time to pay for your play, That sux man . Time to bring casper back from the dead... so to speak.. Looks like we'll have more performance threads to read in the future:naughty:
Gray Gmax 02-11-2007, 10:05 PM Pat/kat, what you do (I think) is respected by alot more people than you know.
RIP Casper, we will learn and hope that we will go in the same way...doing what we love.
Even if you are a Lilly;)
RickDLance 02-11-2007, 10:06 PM Have you had a chance to check it out anymore yet Pat?
Have you had a chance to check it out anymore yet Pat?
Nope.. Someone keeps giving him more "Honey Do" things  ):h
porterz 02-11-2007, 11:44 PM I would love to know just what went wrong.. and the ways to overcome it.
Mike L. 02-12-2007, 12:02 AM I would love to know just what went wrong.. and the ways to overcome it.
Leave your truck stock. :D
Quiky One 02-12-2007, 12:16 AM How many miles on this motor and truck? Just wondering..
Jason
Bolyard 02-12-2007, 12:30 AM he had something like 11000 on his odometer mostly 1/4 mile passes and dyno runs
Quiky One 02-12-2007, 12:34 AM k thanks.
Jason
Nothing worse than damaging a high HP engine when you are not running it hard. I dropped a valve on the way to work on my big block. Always wanted it to go in a blaze of glory but that didn't happen.
lakingslayer 02-12-2007, 12:50 AM Leave your truck stock. :D
Easier said than done;)
Bolyard 02-12-2007, 12:51 AM dont get the wrong idea on this thread. Pat & Kat pushed Casper really hard in his short life and giving us the data that they found. Pat really pushed the envelope on an internally stock engine.
mikeiv74 02-13-2007, 01:04 AM That sucks, do you think that the engine could have held 750 relatively safely if it wasn't driven so hard. Sure hope you get casper fixed I really loved reading about it.
Sure hope you get casper fixed I really loved reading about it.
Casper will be fixed real soon
We drag race... That is what we do fun together.
Dieselson 02-14-2007, 08:32 PM I hope the new and improved casper, with hopefully over 800hp can come to the super chevy show in march, to rain on their party.
MAX707 02-17-2007, 06:23 PM You cant expect a engine to run more than 7or8 hours on 700+rwhp motor. About 4-5 weeks ago I ordered GT42R, Dual Fueler and a bunch of other goody's for my LBZ project and almost put it in without internals. I didn't have the money for the internals then, but realized sooner than later the responsible safe play is wait. It would be devastating to blow a Rod and have to get a new motor or deal with serious rebuild/$$$. So unlike most I waited to recieve my paycheck this week and will purchase Rod's, Camshaft, Spring's and Retainer's. I feel like I just bought insurance on my 800+hp tuck):h . Heck what do I know, this is my first Race Truck and I'm still a youngster:D. It was sure fun though following Casper's trail's he had me shocked:eek: . Now let's see how long a built motor last's with this kind of abuse.
Max Power 03-02-2007, 11:55 AM Any developments?

Damn....only 7-8hrs on a 700whp truck? This diesel stuff is crazy expensive man......
Any developments?
We are waiting for a couple of small parts :(
MAX707 03-02-2007, 03:28 PM Damn....only 7-8hrs on a 700whp truck? This diesel stuff is crazy expensive man......
I know. Going on Ramen Noodle's for like the third Month-:t .
F2000Charlie 03-02-2007, 06:18 PM Sounds like it......damn. Anyone want to sponsor me for tires in a WRX? They're only like 800 bucks a weekend...I'll put your name on the side and it's gonna run on Speed Channel in the World Challenge touring car series:) :D :)
banshee42096 03-02-2007, 06:26 PM i thought mcrat was taking casper in for warranty work engine failure with only 10000ish miles:D
