Our 2005 LLY Dmax "Casper" might have lost a cylinder.

It didn't even happen while driving. Kat drove it, it ran fine. I went to drive it and it wouldn't start at first. I finally got it to start and it idled rough and was smoking white (diesel fuel, STRONG).

I just did a compression test on 6 of 8 cylinders (you can't get #4,#8 with my gauge), and the cylinders were between 295-320PSI except number 3 which was 240. It was a crappy gauge (Mity Vac?), so I need to do it again with a better tool. RickDLance pointed me in the direction of a better gauge.

There are 5 "normal" types of dead cylinders:

Head gasket (it's not using water)
Rod bent
Piston cracked (surprisingly little PCV blowoff)
Injector pushed out of bore (will replace clamp and retest)
Bad valve (rare)

Shortly after California Speedway with the GT42R (119mph pass) it started to make a little white smoke on start, and took longer to crank. We ran it at LACR with no problems except a blown intercooler hose (120.4 mph) and dyno'd it 755rwhp, 1360? TQ.

It ran excellent up until now except for the warm up smoke and the 3 second crank cycles.

The GT42R runs 75 deg hotter EGT's (1625 through lights), makes 80 more RWHP, and runs far higher boost 42 vs. 59 PSI.

Did boost do it? Did HP do it? Did TQ do it? Did EGT's do it? Did it's short brutal life do it?

Not sure.

Since we are taking the engine out in about 2 weeks to put the new one in, I'm not going to tear into it right now, well, except to perhaps replace the injector hold down on #3.

My theory that we would be immune to engine failure if we just ran fuel is probably not true.

I will do the autopsy to find out why, but I felt I must warn those of you running (or contemplating) big #2 HP of my experience.

Well, at least I probably didn't wreck the cores. Good night Engine #1, you were alot of fun, and will be missed.

is that a warranty issue:rolleyes: .casper has been abused took it like a big boy though.

PS - Someone is spreading a rumor that Casper is on it's second engine. This is not true. It had the oil pump fall apart at 3000+ RPM and 42PSI and go instantly to zero oil pressure. It creamed the charger, but the engine was was not replaced, just the oil pump.

The engine has over 250 (way over) 1/4 passes, a few sled pulls, hundreds of dyno pulls, several bottles of nitrous, 14 turbochargers, and perhaps 200 different tunes run on it. It just kept getting meaner until it took Kat home safely, and layed down to rest.

Yeah, I'd say Casper has been through the mill WAY MORE than most. No offense Pat.:)

Sorry to hear it but at least there is a new engine on the horizon!

What kills me is that "Casper" has probably had a harder life than any one of our trucks and probably has the least miles! LOL (I think I remember reading somewhere that it had pretty low miles! Cant rack 'em up that fast if it's only .25 mile at a time! LOL)

Good luck with engine #2, cant wait to see more from You and "Casper" in the future!

When the oil pressure went to zero, we thought that was it, and assumed it would blow any minute, but we kept dialing it up anyhow. :D

In a way, I'm glad we took it to the point of injury before replacing it. If it would have lasted another couple weeks we would have taken it out anyways, and if there was no injury, I would have assumed 750hp is safe.

If that's not a "glass 1/2 FULL" statement, I dont know what is! We could only be so lucky to have a member on here that is happy that his truck broke early enough for him to learn something! LOL Thanks Pat!

Pat,did you check for a misfire code? That's how I found #8 piston was cracked on my truck. Same symptoms your having, white smoke, rough idle, very little blow by,ect. Seems like I had an injector sticking causing too much fuel to be injected into one cylinder.

I still say that once a second CP3 goes on without stronger rods, you life span is limited, but your sure got some good use out of that block:D , I liked reading about what you did with a stock motor, and can hardly wait to see what you do with a built one:D

We are building an engine with the tech support of Guy Tripp at SoCalDiesel, the goal is reliable operation at a given HP level, and will monitor the engine on a routine basis.

The GT42R provides plenty of air at this point and did not exhibit boost fade at all going through the traps at 3500rpm. It is EPA Clean Air Approved at 750HP, and needs more fuel. :D

RIP Casper, I will miss you, but I can't wait to see the debut of casper on engine #2, which is #2 only hopefully. I think its the gaskets, just because the head bolts were stock, and you were running 59 psi. I am striving for the point were a stock engine would last for two runs and a drive home. :)

McRat
02-08-2007, 06:32 PM
I will be surprised if it's a head gasket, normally they won't lose that much compression, but I suppose it's possible.

Dunno yet. I wanted to work on the truck more, but it was my son's birthday. I was going to look everything over this weekend and post about it, but false rumors and insults were flying so I posted this thread to squash the potty mouths.

Nothing worse than damaging a high HP engine when you are not running it hard. I dropped a valve on the way to work on my big block. Always wanted it to go in a blaze of glory but that didn't happen.

You cant expect a engine to run more than 7or8 hours on 700+rwhp motor. About 4-5 weeks ago I ordered GT42R, Dual Fueler and a bunch of other goody's for my LBZ project and almost put it in without internals. I didn't have the money for the internals then, but realized sooner than later the responsible safe play is wait. It would be devastating to blow a Rod and have to get a new motor or deal with serious rebuild/$$$. So unlike most I waited to recieve my paycheck this week and will purchase Rod's, Camshaft, Spring's and Retainer's. I feel like I just bought insurance on my 800+hp tuck):h . Heck what do I know, this is my first Race Truck and I'm still a youngster:D. It was sure fun though following Casper's trail's he had me shocked:eek: .
