I have a 96 6.5 turbo. I was wondering why you don't hear the turbo gear whine like in fords or dodges? Do some people not like that, because I do. Is there a way to change that?

Get your bad self a Kennedy Exhaust system. I have one and I can clearly hear the turbo singing a happy tune. There is even a dog up the street that howls like mad when I go by with the boost up.

The CAT and muffler dampen the turbo noise. In your '96 you mave have a turbo silencer off the airbox? Doesn't matter who you get your exhaust from, just that it fits into your budget and does the job.

what does a turbo silencer look like and where is it located? Which direction does it affect performance?

You'll know if you have the Air box silencer it will have a tube coming out of the boot for the turbo outlet.

After the 3" exhaust and going through the rocker arms on mine, I can hear the turbo just barely out of the exhaust at idle, and clearly singing anywhere above that.

What's your method for adjusting the rockers. Do you do it with the engine at idle like a gasser or what?

hydraulic self-adjusting lifters. I just went through them to see what kind of shape the rockers and pushrods were in, and they looked pretty stinking good, so I replaced the plastic retainers and put it all back together.

remove the turbo muffler and stick a 1 5/8" freeze plug in the hole.

How do you remove the turbo muffler?

the turbo muffler is that long black thing, about a foot long and 2 inches in diameter that hooks into the intake in front of the turbo. this muffler runs right on top of the alternator. take the nut that holds the muffler down off, pull out the muffler from the intake. stick the freeze plug in and your done. (i used a very minute amount of krazy glue, just in case)

does removing the turbo muffler make much difference in the exhaust sound. Is the turbo alot more noticeable?

It makes some difference, I removed mine to accommodate the IC plumbing, with my radio off you do hear the whine, as a test use a freeze plug clamped into place to see if you hear a difference with the turbo muffler removed.

Um, don't suppose you have a picture of where this is exactly? I guess I am not getting where it is from your info. I look around my alternator and am not seeing what you are describing.

Lotharius, You maybe , as I am, a member of the tubro mufflersless club. Welcome to the club. I am not sure but it appears that some of these trucks within a certain year range didn't have this item.

I would say that you don't have it then.

Do you have boostguage? It will show you what boost your making or not. With a '96 1 ton I would say soder a 10K ohm "fixed" resistor inline on the green "B" wire off the MAP sensor.

No boost guage. What is the soddering all about?

quantum mechanic

The MAP sensor gives a baro reading at startup and then reads pressure in the manifold. If you resist this signal ( 10 k ohms ) it will increase your boost levels about 2-3 psi. If you had a boost guage you could see the increase from 6-7 to 10 psi. A pyroguage shows you EGT while towing. EGT's over 1000 deg F are dangerous to engine life.

Is this what we're talking about?
Is it's actual purpose to quite down the turbo, or does it have another purpose and silencing the turbo is just a byproduct?

If it does have another use, what is it?

yes that be the animal in question, gets in the way of IC plumbing.

GMCTD take note of the turbo to airbox filter elbow F engines have it also it's not limited to MAF equipped S engines

It's purpose is making the alternator hard to get out!!!

Ok Guys This Is What I Know About The Gm Intake Tract On 6.5td. Gm Designed These Things To Keep The Intake As Quiet As Possible. The Black Tube Is Actually A Quarter Wave Tube. This Tube Creates A Frequency That Cancels Out Intake Noise, In This Case The Turbo Whistle. The Tube Along With The Too Small Box Around The Air Filter Keeps The Turbo Whistle Too Quiet To Hear. The Too Small Exhaust Sytem Also Contributes To The Equation. Gm Did This Because Early In Their Advertising Of The 6.5 Their Slogan Was "the Noisless, Smokeless Diesel"

Edited by Mod new policy no advert/links by new posters until established as a regular member, in the forum we have been getting sort of spammed by people popping in free ads for themselves. I don't think this to be case here but in fairness to paying vendors I pulled the phone # from this thread. TD

How do you get every word to have a capital letter without wearing out your little finger(s)?

Caps lock, sometimes a Capitol A with a picture of a lock beside it. Usually above the left shift key.

get yourself a 4" exhaust, lose the cat, muffler, and snorkle and you wont believe the whistle. check out my post a couple of days ago titled ( whipped out the big 4" ) and you'll understand.

since this thread is about turbos, anybody know if there are any aftermarket turbos avaliable for these trucks? and would my 94' have a snorkel, if so is it any benifit to remove it?

Yes and no. Peninsular diesel sells a couple bigger ones, Diesel-pro has one.

GM8 turbo for sale VGC

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have a GM8 turbo for sale.

Was told less than 20 000 miles.

Dealer replacement item, the turbo was thought to be the problem of low power output, replaced ~ no change, turned out to be a fuel delivery problem.

Might make a good additon for a twin setup or replacement/ upgrade.

Asking $250, dependant on buyers location, I may cover partial or all shipping.

I am located in central KY.

Not sure why the second picture was darker than the first, if that concerns anyone, just ask and I can supply better picture. Also includes stock actuator not shown in picture.

Thanks

what about this, would it be to much for the engine, the guy is real close to me and is not asking a bad price
