http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gifI couldn't find this in a search, and didn't know where to post it, so am guessing that eventually it'll end up in it's proper place. I'm looking for some info on installing a 2nd 7(?) wire socket in the pickup box of my '03 for a 5th wheel power cord. It looks like there's a bundle of wire for that purpose on the outside of the frame behind the driver's side cab. Need ideas on a location for the socket also. Am I on the right track? Thanks for any help. Frank

I believe you are correct about the bundle of wires being for the 5th wheel plug. Look at the sticker in your glove box, listing the RPO build codes. The code for the $30 "Camper/5th Wheel Trailer Wiring Provisions" is "UY2". A listing with that code should confirm if your truck has the 5th wheel wiring option. The option will also be on the Window Sticker from your truck.

Sorry, I do not have a 5th wheel so I cannot help on the wiring or plug location.

Yes, that is the wiring provisions for the trailer socket for the bed. I purchased a 7 way socket at a local Autozone for something like $7. Here is a pic of where I installed my socket in the bed:

I install mine the same as 4x4man. Clean and effective. It will also last forever up there.

Hey folks...first post on this great board for me. It sounds like you already have the harness installed in you truck, just need to find a good place to put the plug. For those that don't have the harness installed, here's a link to show you what number to order and what you get in the box.

I don't drive my DMax much over here, but I enjoy lurking to see what folks are doing to their rigs. If your ever out this way, give a shout and I'll try and meet up with you.

An index of the wire codes should be attached to the wire bundle. My receptical is between the wheel well and cab like most everyone elses.

I put mine just to the rear of the wheel well. That way I can reach in from the back of the truck and not reach over the side (i'm only 5'10 and reaching sometimes sctraches the truck).

http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Thumbs Up.gifThanks for all the help; I'm headed out to the glovebox to check the codes. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif Bummer; the previous owner tossed the original window sticker. I'm guessing that the socket will come with the wiring diagram to make the connections? If I understand this right, both of the sockets will be "hot" all the time? Thanks again.

The socket will have a pin-out diagram and the wire bundle should have a wire index showing which wire is which.

Yes, both sockets will be "hot" all of the time.

Be sure you check the underhood fuse box to ensure that you have a fuse installed for the trailer battery charger (full time 12V power to the recepticle). You can do a search in the forum and find the correct position in the fuse box for your model year truck (mine's an '02 so it's different than your '03).

Thanks. Got the fuse info from Zeeb earlier.

http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gifI just eyeballed the wires when I picked the location for the socket; guess my old eyeballs don't see so good anymore! I think the wires might have reached if I had a short box. The wires are just long enough, but it looks like I might have to extend the wires to make it easier to finish up the install. Even so, just ahead of the wheel well still looks like the best spot. Does anybody have a wiring diagram of the factory installed harness? I'm having trouble reading mine, and can't quite make out the Lt. Blue wire.....brake lights? Is the Dark Blue 12gauge the one for the trailer brakes? It looks like the Lt.Green is for backup lights, and the Lt Blues is for brake lights, and those 2 are not used? Thanks all. Edited by: Black Max

AKDmax, I was on Oahu for 1 and 1/2 weeks in June. My son is is a set carpenter with Sesame Street Live. We went over and joined him. I was looking for Duramax's but didn't really see many. We couldn't beleve it but there were a few Moter Homes and Camp trailers.

If I remember right the light blue is for cmhsl or center mounted high stop light. You don't use it for trailers, but sometimes on a truck cap.

My rig has a relay wired into the circuit so that you will only draw power off of your coach battery when parked, and it will charge when the engine is running. That way you won't draw power off the truck batteries, leaving you dead batteries.
