Well, think I'm gonna run a cable to each front wheel and turn this thing like my wooden go cart I made when I was 10. Got all of the clunk out of the steering and now another issue pops up.
New Intermediate Shaft, bushed the air bag module that was flopping around when the wheel was turned, shimmed the tilt yoke that was bumping side to side with .020" slop, and new steering box.
No more clunk for 30k but now when the wheel is turned it makes a loud growling sound with felt vibration in the wheel. Loud enough for passengers to hear and comment. Pulled the air bag module out and disconnected the Intermediate Shaft. The wheel turns smooth and quiet so it must be the upper bearing/bushing under load, or something back down in the steering box.
Don't know how to access the upper bearing because I get everything removed down to the snap ring on the column shaft, and there's that stamped steel piece past the spline that appears to be pressed on the shaft. The vibration sounds and feels like it's below this area which I would assume houses a nylon bearing that may be dry. If it's a roller bearing I doubt this would create the problem I have. The tilt knuckle appears to be fine with plenty of grease.
Anyone know how to remove this stamped steel piece or is this the beginning of a bad nightmare?
Thanks........Billy Edited by: bhowell
