I am thinking of putting 305 nitto tires on the new 2005 2500 HD D/A with a 4" lift. I see lots of trucks with H2 tires and wheels. I am new to the D/A. This forum is a wealth of info. I tried a search for affects on larger tires but can not seem to find any info The allison website says adverse affects from larger tires. What do I need to do to make these tires work. Since joining this forum I have read enough info to make my head explode. Thank you for all that everyone does here. This site is amazing http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif Edited by: 2500HD04

Many members on here run 285's or larger on their trucks with little adverse affects. Maybe fuel is the only thing that I have heard for the most part. There is one small item and that is that some dealerships will not diagnose problems with the allison or drive train if larger tires have been installed. There was a TSB about this some time ago, I would not worry about it too much and just talk to you service advisor and explain to him/her what you plan on doing and see if you will have any issues. Other than that I don't forsee any problems... Oh and WELCOME... Enjoy the forum....http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

Thank you for the info. I am keeping the original set just for that reason. I have read about loss of power with larger tires. I am not to concerned about mileage. I am only getting 8 mpg with my gasser so anything over that is an improvement. I have done alot of reading and the tts tow tune seems to fit my purpose just perfect but I am still looking at edge/juice combo.

Well you will get better than that with the Dmax.. Even with larger tires you will still be ok, also if you add that TTS tune you will do fine. Good luck...

im running the rancho 4" with 305's right now and love it, looks good, drives good, MPG went donw a bit but i knew that already. Also running full on exhaust, no cat, no egr, air intake, and TTS tow tune and its very smooth and fun to drive

I also ran 305 Nitto on Weld 8 with a 4" Rancho lift. Loved the tires for the first 6 or 7000 miles. Wore down to 50% by 8,000 (rotated often), wore out at 12,000. Very noisy after 50% tread worn off. Very bad for fuel mileage - 2 to 3 mpg drop with 305's. Tried them because of being load range E and not reasonable 285 is made in an E. I'm VERY hard on tires and have used 245, 255, 265, 285, 295, and 305 - all 16's on a D/A. Also spent the big $ and went 19.5, which has been discussed a lot on this forem. Went back to 285 - while they are only D's, they seem to wear best, carry the load best, give decent mpg, and last well, at least for me.

I've got 295 BFG's on a 16x10 wheel with a Rancho 4". The 295 is a little over a 33" tire. I only had to trim a bit off the back of the air dam at the wheel wells and a bit on the inside of the wheel wells. No major rubbing. You will need a programmer to reprogram your ECM because your speedo will be off. A Predator or Quad or others will do this. Being that your gonna get that to fix the speedo, you can put a tune in to regain your lost power. Even the lowest tunes on these programmers will gain back your lost power and then some. I got low 17's in the city on my mileage before the lift driving conservitively and still got low 17's after the lift driving the same way. If i'm romping around on it in the city, I've only dropped down to 16mpg. Highway I got 20mpg before the lift but don't know what it is after. Haven't been on a long highway trip since. I'll find out this weekend though. I would anticipate 19 or so, but am still hoping for 20. I'm sure it would change though since i've raised the truck. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the info. I think I will go with the 285's. I have them on my 03 and like the way they ride. I would still like to know more about the problems anyone has had with larger tires and a stock ally. What is allison talking about on there website ? adverse affects with larger tires.

Mostly a lot of BS.

3500SRW come stock w/ 265 tires but 265 on a 2500 could damage it?

305/70/16 and 285/75/16 have the same overall diameter. 33 inch. 305 is only 20 mm wider, less than an inch wider (2 cm, <2.54 cm per inch>), with a lesser sidewall heigth ratio. So a 285 and a 305 will have the same effects on your speedo being off and your DIC mileage, ergo your tranny wont know the diff. The width will increase your patch size and increase your rolling resistance hence reducing mileage. I thought about it and said screw it, so I put 35 parnelli jones tires on. Tranny is fine, mileage on the highway at 70 cruise is showing 14.8 which translates into 17.3 mpg. Not to shabby for a fat truck. I have a six inch fabtech lift and I love how it handles and looks. My wife even says it is going to be easier to put the baby seat in the truck than it will be to put in her lexus gs 400. Super wife.

I know my dealer personally and he and the service manager really like the truck. He promised me he will take care of any if any warranty probs I have!! :o)

I am edging towards 295, they are a bit taller and not as wide as the 305. Lots of snow and wide tires do not go together. I have 285s BFGs on my 03 gasser and they are great in snow.Edited by: 2500HD04

I've seen some of the trucks from Greenland. They sport some really wide tires for snow travel. I'm talkin rrrrreally wide. They float on the snow instead. There was a thread on them some where in here. They looked pretty nice too.
