: Secondary filtration? Needed or not?
blnagel 08-21-2004, 01:27 AM I am still thinking about getting some sort of secondary filtration set-up. What are the benefits of going with a lift pump? Would the lift pump increase mpg? or would just a secondary filter setup increase the mpg? Does the nicktane or racor setups have a lift pump? I think the FASS does. I like the 2 micron filtration the racor claims. The FASS is only 10 microns and I am not sure what the Nicktane has. I live in Montana and I believe that a heater would be a plus. Cost for any of the above?
I just dont know which route to go. Any ideas from my fellow Dmaxers? Thanks alot.

GMC-2002-Dmax 08-21-2004, 01:39 AM I have been running the NICKTANE for almost a year.
I have 12K on the CAT Filter and the Stocker............
Will be changing them out on Sunday..........
No problems as to cold weather usage.
I have never run any additives so I am curious to see the condition of the filters.
No lift pump either so I would like to see how much of the filter is being used.
I can't comment on mileage gains although the balance rates on my injectors are all less that 2.0 +/- and no abnormal noises, ticking etc.
Nicktane is 2 micron and is a pre OEM install.
The heater is up to you, I saw no problems even at -20 this past winter..........

blnagel 08-21-2004, 01:44 AM -20 and was ok? I guess that is not bad. It can get that frigid here. Please post after you change out since I wanna see how the filters looked without any additives. I wonder though if the lift pump would improve mpg? I would hope so but if you go with the FASS then it is only 10 microns. The dilema continues.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

The real Racor kit comes with a 10 micron filter. Racor says it's because they believe a two stage filter process is more efficient and the OEM is a 2 micron.
The Racor only comes with a heater and H20 sensor, brush guard is optional. One of the Vendors here sells a Racor component kit you can get 10 or 2 micron, and with or without heat and H20 sensor. His kit has a slightly different brush guard available.
The actual Racor kit is going to cost you a bit more than Greg's, but both are around $300.00 for complete kits, brush guard extra.
TC Dmax 08-21-2004, 08:16 AM I purchased the Racor R60 kit (heated/water sensor) version from Greg and am very pleased with it. Very simple to install, everything needed to do the installation was in the kit.Using it as a pre OEM filter. Lift pumps are a good idea especially for priming the system and to maximize the useage of filter media. As far as increasing MPG goes I would have to say for my setup it's a minimal increase, maybe 25-30 miles extra out of a tank of fuel.
Something else I use is the Fuel Pressure/Restriction gauge that Kennedy sell's. It lets me know how well my filters are flowing and when it's getting close to changing them out. Takes all the guesswork out of it when you are basing your filter changeouts soley on mileage.I take readings every 1500 miles and chart them on an excel spreadsheet. Also lets me know if my lift pump is still working.
blnagel 08-21-2004, 10:47 AM Who is Greg? So you can buy a different lift pump to install? Thanks for the help.

TC Dmax 08-21-2004, 11:16 AM Greg (http://www.lubespecialist.com/) is one of the vendors here.
I bought my lift pump from the dealer. It's an EP309 made to fit later model GM 6.5 diesels. It has a flow rate of about 4PSI at idle. Although Bosch/GM don't recommend using one I checked with my dealer and the tech first before I installed anything and both agreed this would not void my warranty. In fact they were very intriged by the secondary filter setup in general and agreed cleaner fuel is better. Kennedy (http://www.kennedydiesel.com/) sells a lift pump kit with some custom made fittings, might want try him. Edited by: TC Dmax

Bronco 08-21-2004, 12:46 PM When I changed my OEM last time, I noticed 1/4" rust chunks in the very bottom of the filter. The part that screws out. It has several little cutouts that are perfect for depositing and trapping sediment.
Be sure to look in the bottom of the screw out plastic piece when servicing filter. FYI.
Blue Max 08-21-2004, 07:16 PM Secondary filtration, don't leave home without it. It sure can't hurt to have cleaner fuel. Just my .02-
My lift pump did not increase mialage, I installed it because of the 5 micron filter water seperator and it saves my thumb when changing out all the filters. It is a Standyne and another reason I bought this particular one is it has a 10k hr. service cycle. Extra filtration in my books is a must in my books as you dont know what grade of fuel you are getting nowdays.

arguy 08-22-2004, 03:48 PM Hey, isn't there a system out there that has a automatic water drain with filtration? I seems like it mounted on the frame but I don't remember if it had a pump or not. I tried to find that system but have been unable to locate anything like it, has anyone seen anything like this?? http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif
Hey, isn't there a system out there that has a automatic water drain with filtration?
I'll admit it's been some time since I looked for all that stuff, basically since I decided on the Racor, but I don't recall ever seeing anything with an "automatic water drain"...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif
I think they've all got water drains, but you have to do it the old fashioned way.
