I recently purchased a 2003 with 50,000 miles. I have bBeen getting educated in the forums. I changed out my fuel filter, and rear end. Started to get things together to change out the transmission. (am going to use Mobile 1) I went to the dealer to buy the external and suction filter. Dealer sold me a external ($32.00) and said there was no internal filter. I told him I thought there was, that I had been reading up on it on the internet. He checked his parts book, and said no, that the external was the only one. So does anybody know the part number and where can I order one from. (Am thinking of returning that $32.00 filter.)

Seems like the dealer doesn't know what he is talking about. Plus $32 for the spin on is pricey.http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif I bought my external spin-on for about $9 and the internal suction filter for about $35. Sounds like he may have given you the spin-on but charged for a suction filter. I don't have the number handy, but you can probably find it in the Allison section of this forum.

Yes return the filter it is a burn. Eric (Dmaxalitech) a vendor here can hook you up or go here http://www.vicinity.com/allisontrans/startprx.hm and find a Allison distributer in your area.

Your dealer is not familiar with the internal suction filter as it only needs to be replaced at rebuild or if you elect to change pan size to deep. About $8 bucks for a spin on $17 ish for suction filter. You don't need a pan gasket.

I replaced my internal filter when I switched to Transynd. Maybe not necessary, but figured since I was pulling the pan to get all/most of the fluid out (used the Hoot method), might as well change it too.

Every thing went great until I pulled the internal filter out. I was doing a neat job until then. When I pulled it out, about a pint of fluid splashed everywhere.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif

But I was glad I did because that was that much more of the old fluid removed.http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big%20Smile.gif

How long will the trans pan gasket last,or how many off's and on's will the gasket endure. I had the internal filter changed twice now with no noticeable alum. or iron. Where can I buy the external filter for 9 bucks? My dealer is getting 27.50 for it.

The Allison pan gasket is considered a lifetime gasket. There is really no reason to remove the pan as we have a drain plug to remove fluid.

That being said torqued properly and with the rugged construction of the gasket I can't see it not outlasting quite a few removals.

Mines was apart 7-8 times or more before I went Mag-Hytec.The O-ring is sealing well but I have doubts it will stand up to the life of the stock gasket.

Then again I have no intentions of breaking the seal.

I ended up returning the spin on filter. Parts man gave me a song and dance about "there is a check valve in the filter and that is way it is so expensive". I found the filters on a ebay store ($27.00 for 3 and the same part number as GM.) He also had the suction. It was $27.00 and the GM part. The sellers email address is bmcreynolds@sbcglobal.net.

The ebay prices are not that great. Most of the supporting venders here can match/beat that deal. Joe has a very good price on the combo, uses the SPX spin on filter, similer to the Baldwin.

SPX is the original manufacture for Allison
