so im taking a road trip from San Diego CA to Biloxi Mississippi on March 1st. Now of course im going to drop my truck off to get everything checked out, have them fix anything that might possibly go wrong with it, cause thats a long haul from Cali to Miss.

Now i stopped by a independent mechanic and he said he could get it all checked out and fixed in 2 days tops. I know for sure i need brakes and i have a leaky injector pump seal, and thats what i told him.

I stopped by the GMC "stealership" and they said they can perfrom the major service starting at like 369 or something like that, and anything extra like brakes cost more.


So my question is, what would you guys go with?? The independent guy or the dealership? Just a little side not, besides the leak and the brakes my Burb runs like a dream.

It's not like the old burb is on warranty. As long as your confident that the independant guy is competent I would go with him. Dealers have a tendency to overcharge compared to private shops and often thier techs are diesel retards.

agreed. if the independant mechanic does good quality work (and actually knows about this engine) then go with him.

Yep, if the independent guy knows diesels go with him. If he doesn't, do it yourself... :rolleyes:

Have the brakes done independently, take the truck to a Stanadyne IP repair shop - guess who knows how to work on a DB2?

yea, the brakes are easy stuff for any shop.. the motor work, i would make sure you find some one who know more about these motors other then broken cranks, because a shop like that is not going to do you any good. (thats what every shop here thinks and they are all amazed my truck is still running :rolleyes: )

A bit annoying, isn't it? Everybody here thinks it's an Oldsmobile engine with diesel heads bolted on and wonders how it can possibly still run and how I can possibly stand to own it... :rolleyes:

I've had that reaction more times than I care to count. I just about have a prepared speach on how it isn't a reworked 350 and is in fact a "true" diesel.
