Aren't these diesels CAN (contol area network)? Looking for a scanner, was going to buy the autoxray 4000 (OBD II and CAN) until a dealer told me he didn't think it compatable.

Thanks guys.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif

I ordered the 9145 today, $209 shipped. Suppose to also be CAN compliant. The 9135 appears not to be, so it may be worthless on new cars in the near future (2008 compliance)

Mike,

I just bought one of those yesterday at Pep Boys on sale for $200.00. It seems to talk to both the truck and my '01 Jeep Grand Cherokee okay, but no trans stuff. Got some neat features if they all work. I just disconnected the EGR plug on the truck, so we'll see if I get codes set now...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

Is there a product that just interfaces with a laptop? Then all you would need is some software and a plug adapter. . . Call me crazy, but it seems like you could make a lot more versatile and easy to use system that way.

did you look into upgradeabilty, flash or something? Maybe they have something for what you are looking for. Why do you say no trans codes?

Dennis,

I'm not sure since I've not really pursued it, but some here are using software called AutoTap with their laptops. I didn't look because I don't have a laptop...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

Mike,

The literature says it's flash upgradeable, but it's only going to be ECM stuff. There was a rep at the store who they stopped when I asked about TCM functions. Don't know who he worked for, but he said if I wanted to do trans stuff there was a unit available for about $2200.00...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif

If I'm going to spend that kind of money, a Tech II isn't that much more. Supposedly there are some scanners that will do some trans codes, but they seem to be in the $800.00 range and don't have software for the '04's.

I got this basically because I wanted to be able to check for codes when I unplugged the EGR, as I've said before, the SM at my stealer and I don't get along well. I don't want to go in there with any kind of codes showing if I can help it. I fretted over the possibilty of injector codes Edge told me would be there from the Beta software, but there weren't any when they plugged their Tech II into it, I just didn't want to do that worrying stuff again. Nor have I a couple of grand or better for a real scanner right now.

Zeeb,

Thanks. Guess I'll start one on AutoTap then.
