My truck runs great, idles great, but it is dying at or near redline when towing up hills (5-6K load)

Is the tranny/engine working in concert....rev limiting the engine or do I have problems?

It feels like a gas engine with the choke on at higher RPMs.

Sorry for the newb question, I just don't understand how these engines work.

Well........these trucks are rev limited in stock form......so dying at the redline is about right.

in my experience a 5-6K load is nothing....I mean you really shouldn't notice a load that light....especially at the top end of the revs. This motor pulls the easiest at 21-2300 rpm but even at 3350 or whatever the redline is it shouldn't be "dying"

Maybe someone else will pipe up....

We could use some more detail about the "dying" does it just stop accelerating or does it really cut out?

Could be a plugged fuel filter....that tends to restrict HP and RPM

They all let up at 3100 ropm or so.

No need for those kind of revs.

Upshift.

Pulling such a light load, you could probably leave the O/D switch off.

Should pull you right up a hill without trouble, at 55-60.

Unless you are trying to beat the Vette next to you.
