: lift pumps installed. have questions.
carcrafter22 01-31-2007, 07:01 PM I have finally conquerd the quick disconnects on the fuel tank sending unit and finished installing my TTS lift pumps, but I have some questions. I can turn the key to accesory and the pump will prime for 2 sec. like its supposed to but when I turn the truck on I cant feel if they are running or not. I kjnow I wont be able to hear them, but shouldnt they run fine if they prime/ pump for the 2 seconds when I turn the key. Next question I hear most people say they can definatly feel a difference with as little as a 65hp tune I have mcrats 500hp race tune and cant tell a difference really is it just me or is my truck just lucky I have never had any 1093 codes or limps with this 500hp "race" tune and I have been hard on it but most people say they can limp on 100-120hp what are your thoughts. I guess I just need for you guys to tell me I have a powerful tune and made the right choice with the lift pumps or that I can look forward to limping soon because of all the power or that I have some freak truck that should have limped already but somehow hasnt. maybe I am worried about nothing but I would like you guys opinions. Thanks
Randy
jmg343 01-31-2007, 07:06 PM I think you're worried about nothing and your pumps are running fine. To be honest, I don't really feel any difference and never have with mine. I think I can hear a difference, and I know I can see a difference in smoke. I installed 2 leds so I know when they are on now. Kiss your tranny good-bye a limp is coming...soon.

I think you're fine, I don't think the lift pumps of any brand are "noticeable" not by power I don't think. They just allow you to make more power and help keep 1093's from happening. It should feel smoother if you ever had any fuel delivery problems in the past.
You MAY need to shim your fpr valve though,if you haven't already, I would just wait and see, lots of info here about shimming.
Enjoy your pumps!

DOH! Beat me to it!
JoshH 01-31-2007, 07:24 PM I couldn't really tell if my pumps were running or not either. I also hooked up a couple of LEDs to my pumps to indicate when/if they are receiving power and ground. I did notice a difference in my truck with the pumps because before I was emptying the rails and it would fall on it's face in the upper RPM range. If you want to hook up some LEDs I made a post on how to do it.

And a good post at that. I got the idea to do this from Josh and did it exactly as he did. It works excellently.
jugdish35 01-31-2007, 08:27 PM Joshh, where is the post at??? and yes i searched!
JoshH 01-31-2007, 08:53 PM Here you go. http://dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=129615
carcrafter22 01-31-2007, 09:25 PM I just got back from going out to eat and I cant tell the difference, I have never had any 1093's before but figured I would need the pumps anyway for when I get my new GT42R in a few months. I think I will install the LED's like you did josh, and thanks everyone for the responses
carcrafter22 01-31-2007, 09:32 PM oh yeah for anyone interested the TTS pumps are very nice and the install went smoothly the only thing I had a problem with was getting the quick disconnect off of the fuel tank sending unit I finally had to take the tank down and even then it was hard to get off wich I dont understand because I have taken quick disconnects off many times but this one was a pain, the quic disconnect by the fuel cooler came off easy
redws6rocket 01-31-2007, 11:12 PM i installed mine a few weeks ago, i just sold my programmers and was stock, waiting for efi live. i could feel a nice difference. but yes they install very nice and the mcrat tune is alot of fun. can't wait for the track to open when it warms up here. also going to pull a few times this year!
TIM Z 02-01-2007, 08:49 PM So is dropping the tank a " Must" ? I kinda hope not, i really dont want to have to !! I hear how easy the TTS pumps install and hope im hearing correct.
carcrafter22 02-01-2007, 08:53 PM I dont think it is a must for everyone I did it because I had a very stubborn disconnect tool the ends that go inside of the quick disconnect were worn down so I had to drop the tank down far enough to get my hands and a tool I made in there. You probably wont have to drop it, but even if you do its real easy only 2 bolts then lower it real simple.you shouldnt have to take it off the jack just lower take hose off then jack back into place.
jmg343 02-01-2007, 09:56 PM You wont have to lower it. I only lowered mine because I did the fuel pick-up too. The quick disconnects can be a PITA but fight with them for a bit and you will get them.
JoshH 02-01-2007, 10:01 PM I used the little plastic Lisle disconnects and got them off with no problems. I bought the set at the local NAPA for less than $12. http://www.lislecorp.com/tool_detail.cfm?detail=570
Diesel Tech 02-01-2007, 10:23 PM I have found the cheap disconnect tool from Lisle is the way to go. I have high dollar Snapon one's and the Lisle one's. The Snapon one's still look new after 5 years as they are a pain to use so they sit in the tool box and look pretty!
carcrafter22 02-02-2007, 12:05 AM yeah my little cheap ones worked best too but that one connector was a pain
TIM Z 02-03-2007, 04:07 PM Cool to know, i got the cheepie Lisle ones too, I just dont feel like dropping the tank if i dont half to.. I dont have a lift and i had " A REAL fun time:mad: " when i dropped the tank on my 04 Z-71 to change to a high PSI pump, I dont want to do it again!
Diesel Tech 02-03-2007, 07:16 PM Just take your time and clean the top of the tank off around the sendor with a rag before you start. Some times it's easier if you drop the driveshaft to stick your head up in there to see things but once you've done it more than once you know what to feel for when you reach up there.
redws6rocket 02-04-2007, 03:40 PM i dropped my tank and since i was at work and had the lift to install the billet pick up. i love the pumps, they do there job and are very quiet.
dbunn 02-04-2007, 04:28 PM I apologize for the ignorance, but at what point does a person need to add lift pumps to their truck. I have an Edge EVO that I will be instaling when I return from Iraq. That is the only engine mod right now. Also, what exactly does it do? Is it like a fuel pump with more pressure? Thanks.

Well if you plan to do much more, you'll want a lift pump or two. It's purpose is to provide a better flow of fuel at the inlet of the injection pump. A lot of times guys add BIG tunes and can't get the full potential because they're short on fuel supply. Do a search as there are more than one good options and lots of info.
Search for these:
Kennedy Diesel

Also, you'll be returning from Iraq? I'm taking it you help give us the freedoms we so lightly take and abuse and take advantage of?
I'd like to say Thanks from me my family and all of my loved ones, thank you for what you do!:saluteusa:
dbunn 02-06-2007, 04:15 AM I hope to be back in the states in the October time frame. I will be on midtour leave in May and will be putting the Edge EVO on and pulling the fifth wheel cross country.
You are very welcome. I would like to say thank you for your support. I will try to post a picture or two if I can. I am a medevac pilot in the Baghdad AO. It has been getting pretty sporty over here lately.
Thanks for the info on the lift pumps. Sounds like it is one of those things that I do not have to have right now, but definitely would not hurt anything if I installed them. I am looking at a Transgo Jr. install this summer.
carcrafter22 02-06-2007, 09:53 PM be safe buddy I know what its like over there been there done that
winter200 02-06-2007, 10:20 PM What are you guys doing about your filters when you start running any bigger tunes? From what I understand the filters are basically designed for 60 gallons per hour and that flow rate is rated for a 350 hp engine. I am going to put a stanadyne filter setup on mine with heater etc and am just starting to look at pumps. I am looking at efi live and like the looks of the tts pumps. When do you go to 2 pumps instead of just one and when do you start upgrading the filter setups to handle more flow?
