: No magnet!

I changed my tranny fluid and filter today only to find no magnet. I called the service dept. that I use and asked them for the part number. Now I know where it went. The rep says " I have done a hundred of them and never saw any magnet". The first time I had it done the dealer did it. Where do I get the magnet? I have been running the truck for close to 26000 miles with no magnet. The fluid did come out like new though. The truck is an 03 DA/ALLI 4x4 with 36000 on it. Is this a major problem?

Change that 10.oo spin-on every 10k miles. I don't think you're gonna die...but I would shoot for some kind of warrenty extension or something.

Lets not forget there is a magnet still yet in the pan. Since the Allison has a drain plug dropping the pan and cleaning the magnet isn't necessary. So the spin on magnet is adding a serviceable magnet only for ease of maintenance for the most part.

I would recommend dropping the pan on a fluid change to clean the pan magnet as it will prolly be fuzzy, and of course replacing the ring magnet.

The pan magnet won't see squat and neither will the pan filter. I am trying to have a sump screen made to replace the restictive sump filter and increase flow. I recomend changing spin on every 5K. That is the filter you need to address. Would you go 10K on your engine spin on? How often do you change the screen in your engine pan?

Mr Goodwrench did the same thing to me. Charged me about $50 and sent the magnet to the landfill. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif

Looks like a good excuse to find a "TRANSMISSION MAGICIAN" to build this thing the way it ought to be..........

Hmmmmmmmmmm...........wonder if that guy in Michigan is any good............http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Wink.gif

Stoner; I read a complaint someone had about him, after having his transmission done. The complaint was something about tires wearing out..... Yeah. Something like that.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

The pan magnet will collect "some" filings but not as efficient as the ring magnet at the spin on,yes.

I'm interested in your findings on sump filter restriction. I have cut open a few spin ons and not found much debris.

The Engine sump screen is backed up by a spin on last I checked and I change at less then 5K. I believe that the engine sump screen is alot different in design then the Allison. The Allison sump Pick up has a fiber filter, engine? Nope.

I don't doubt as it is only recommended service is at over haul so it collects ,not much.

I'd have the service dept give you one. I'd be a little peeved.

Might screetch about a bit of an extened warantee just for grins but I wouldnt be really worried. Try to get some documentation though that the dealerships SNAFU caused a part to be left out for 26k if there ever is a prob you can go back and get nasty

How much fluid will you need when you change the spin on?

A few ounces? not much. Put the magnet on before you fill it with fluid or prepare to be splattered with atf

Got the magnet today from an allison dealer close by. Purchased a few filters also. Good thing cause the baldwin I used yesturday looked fine without the magnet but when I put the magnet in it just about completely covered all the openings.

MtC, I turned back a Wix spin-on because the magnet covered almost all of the holes in the filter base. The OEM Allison filter is designed for use with the magnet.

Will there be an issue if the Magnet covers the holes to an extent, or will the fluid still be able to get by? I just put on a NAPA gold filter and same deal. The holes are closer towards the center of the filter, right under the magnet. Thanks.

Will probally restrict flow. Cause a pressure problem? Less fluid will go through filter.

For what it costs for filter.....put a proper one on. Compared to redoing trans........http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

I wen't ahead and just pulled the magnet for this filter cycle. Will end up changing it in 5 to 10k anyway. Will get the other style filter then and put the magnet back in. Just flushed the tranny anyway. Thanks.

Damn idiots, that is why a delaer will never touch my truck unless it is a warrenty issue!

Without and with... stock Allison filter
I agree with MikeL change the Allison filter every 5000

Newbie question here...

When you are talking about changing the filter every 5K are you talking about changing the fluid also? If not, when should the fluid be changed.

I have about 1,000 miles on my truck right now...would it help/hurt/make no difference if I changed my tranny filter now (aka, breakin, etc)??

Thanks

Duckhunter, I changed just my tranny filter (not fluid) the first time at 1,500 miles - which was an Allison breakin recommendation.

Just the filter.

Just the filter.

Hoot is correct, just the filter. Your Ally will love you for it. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Hug.gif
