: LLY EGT help
tws_andrew 08-19-2004, 03:06 PM Since installing the Edge on my LLY I have seen really high EGTs towing to the point where I cannot really run the chip here above 60mph uphill if the outside temp is above 80 F. I put in the 4" BRP single system (leaving the cat) and they dropped a small amount but not much(highly recommend MBRP for overall quality BTW). How much should I expect with the cat back? I was told about 100 degrees but I am definately not seeing that much. How much more could I gain from an AFE stage two and or a cat delete pipe from MBRP. I really need to drop the EGTS for towing the boat up the mountains around here. What do you recommend?
Burner 08-19-2004, 06:28 PM doing a check sum.............find out what your "normal" temps are first...then check the EDGE. EGR probably makes the thing hot. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif...hate those things.
tbone1227 08-19-2004, 07:03 PM when you say its running hot, what are the readings ? and what level are you running it on when towing ? also, what is the boost and defuel set at when towing as well, this info might help to determine whats going on ? Let us know
tws_andrew 08-19-2004, 08:54 PM Towing on L2 or L3. Defueling 4 and 5 only. Low boost fuel set to 4 or 5. Installed AFE Stage 2 today and it seems much better but I am not sure yet since I haven't towed. Will know tomorrow if MBRP and AFE helped much
tws_andrew 08-19-2004, 08:55 PM Sorry. Forgot. Readings are near 1300 when applying enough throttle to tow 4500lb mastercraft up a med hill above 60 mph at 4800 ft elevation. Now sure how to describe it more than that
THEONE 08-19-2004, 09:31 PM Where is your EGT mounted? In exhaust manifold or downpipe?
tbone1227 08-19-2004, 10:46 PM first off, if you have a stock tranny - i would be careful towing in level 3 (+70 ??) with low boost that high and no de-fueling !! youre better off in level 2 and 3 is ok but keep the low boost level at 1-2 and defuel all

Andrew, I need to say something here, and understand I'm not saying this to be a smart ass, what I need to say is this, the high temp reading your getting is normal, because like your telling us, your driving up a hill 60 mph or better towing, not only that you say the outside temp is above 80 degrees, the gauge is doing its job, its telling you to get your foot out of the throttle before you turn your turbo into Three Mile Island.
redneck45 08-20-2004, 07:31 AM Yea but only 4500lbs? I can tow my boat (about the same weight) at WOT in level 3 and never see EGTs past 1250, and I got stock exhaust, how steep is that hill?
The Original Diesel 08-20-2004, 12:30 PM Yea but only 4500lbs? I can tow my boat (about the same weight) at WOT in level 3 and never see EGTs past 1250, and I got stock exhaust, how steep is that hill?
I don't believe you.
Unloded at WOT my truck will easily hit 1350+ on level 3 so I know you are over 1250. Is you probe in the manifold?
I have a MC boat as well and I have trouble with EGTs. THis sucker gets hot, way hotter than my LB7. Funny thing is I can set my Juice back to stock and run 85mph all day and never see EGT over 1200. My LB7 stock would not pull worth a crap and could not hold 85mph but the LLY stock actually does a pretty good job.
tbone1227 08-20-2004, 02:22 PM bump what OD said - i dont know how you could hit WOT in level 3 with stock exhaust and intake and not see EGT's that high, regardless if theres a hill involved. I tested various set-ups with the edge and found that i could lessen the egt's on level 2, low boost on 1, and defuel on. ? for Redneck - why would you be running WOT in level 3 towing a boat ?? with all stock on top of that ??
LanduytG 08-20-2004, 02:43 PM I can do 1200* stock everything by just punching it hard. 1300* wil not hurt it at all. Turbo's are made much better than they use to be. I know of a company that manufactures generators and use the 8.1L GM and they run 1600* all the time for hours on end.

DuckhunterInTN 08-20-2004, 03:12 PM so they turbo the 8.1?
LanduytG 08-20-2004, 07:30 PM Yes its turbo charged with intercooler. I forget the hp buts hooked to a 175KW generator. They are also doing the same thing with the 4.3L on a 80 kw set.

I wouldn't worry about hurting the turbo I would worry about hurting the motor!
LanduytG 08-20-2004, 10:30 PM The heat kills the turbo. Only in the past few yers have turbos been able to take the heat. The engineers at Navistar when I worked there said exhaust temps are controlled do to turbo melting down.

JJs DuMax 08-21-2004, 06:00 PM LanduytG, do I understand correctly the Dumax defuels itself if EGT's get too high? So far I'm pretty impressed with just how "idiot proof" the D/A package is. JJ http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
JJ,
I'm not Greg, but if I may?
There's no way for it to defuel stock because there is no EGT input for the computer. The Edge/Attitude or the Banks Six Gun will do it if you install the EGT probe that comes with those modules.
