My aunt & uncle just bought a 1999 GMC K2500 HD 4wd push button 4wd( 5.7L....4L80E....CC ) Did this model have that heat activated central axle disconnect? Is it an updated version of the 1988 model that sometimes failed in really cold weather? Or is it a better version, like a vacuum activated version?

nope...electric motor, really fast, you can update the older ones to the new motor, GM has a kit available
