I thinking of buying a 95-96 dodge ram with the CTD 12v with a handshaker tranny but I was wondering about the 5 speed and its limits on torque with an aftermarket clutch (of course). The truck will be a weekend off road fun truck only (still keeping the D-max to take the girl out and oh yeh cause I love it)


What are the issues (if any) with that setup. Im pretty sure that the dodge 5 speed is a pretty durable tranny (wouldnt ever have one of there autos) but i also wanted to add some serious HP to the big bad Cummins.


So that brings me to this Q. What performance mods should I do??

There are lots of things you can do with a 12 vavle. Change the fuel plate, build the pump-bigger delivery vavles, get some 370 injectors, bigger charger, Killer Dowl Pin, dual disc clutch, 3 or 4k governor spring kit, stiffer vavle springs for the 4k kit. The only things I have heard of on the 5sp other than the clutch is the 5th gear nut. You might want to talk to DFP Cummins as he has a 12 valve pulling truck, he can help ya out more than I can.

My brother had a 97 with the 12 valve and five speed and fifth gear just recently went out of it. Dont know if it is a common problem or a fluke. Just to let u know.

5th gear nut on trans needs fully splined shaft. IIRC haisley does that

Find a 1998.5 12 valve with the 5 speed. you get the p7100 pump (the most fuel of a mech pump and PDR can upgrade it to stoopid pump specs P&amp;B etc 3500 GSK)


also the np241tcase is the dhd model not the dld model


Clutches.... well, LUK has a good one , as well as mcleod and South Bend Clutch.


south bend clutch can also take care of the 5th gear problem


Max input torque as specd is 750lbs-ft

Fix the fifth gear issue and put a better clutch (I use South Bend) and the five speed will take more than you will probably ever put through it.


I just recently put better parts in my entire tranny (Dodge not Chevy) Parts include but not limited to syncros, fully splined and cryoed mainshaft, cryoed and hardened gears etc...


My tranny is goin strong

Big Thanks guys I want the truck to be as fast if not faster than my D-max but it will also be an off road truck going to make my own lift and drive shafts for it so they wont break under the added power.
