Can this be done by exchanging the rear frame section of an ext. cab short bed to a std. cab frame?

You wana make a short bed regular cab? And keep all the 2500hd frame and suspention? Easiest way would be to get a reg cab and cut the frame behind the cab(behind the cross member somewere) and shorten it and then stick a shortbed on it(get one from any place, even a 1/2 ton bed should go on there) It would be a disgusting amount of work but it would be cool. It would also require a very good fab shop. Plus all the little things like driveshfts and all the lines and stuff. I have what you are looking for except its a long bed, I dont think the long bed is all that bad. There are other ways but regardless either way you are cutting a frame. Or the janky way but easier would be to do the cutting after the rear spring shackle(its called bobing IIRC) and do some sheet metal work on your bed, that would look messed up though IMO.
