I want to purchase a replacement k&n filter for my truck. It is an 07 crew cab short bed. I talked to the service manager at the local dealership and he said " don't do it. the oil on those filters is bad for the motor" I am interested in increasing my fuel mileage, but I don't want hurt my truck cause I just love it!!!! It's my first diesel. I have used K&N filters on all my gas trucks with no problems.

I am having trouble locating a k&n for my truck. Is an 06 filter the same?
Thanks.

What he means is if you overoil,it will screw up your sensor, throwing a code.I would strongly advise you to stay stock--I've used K+N too in my more stupid days---they let way too much dirt in.Check out the K+N threads here on DP and look carefully at the comparative charts.Plus a diesel sucks in way more air than your old gassers.Don't be tempted by that stupid ping-pong ball!!!!

I had a K&N on my 01 and it was a nightmare! The new stock unit is as good as it gets. MBRP exhaust and call it a day! my .02

I had a K&N in my old truck. I did not have any problems out of it. BUT since I have had my Chevy and being on Diesel Place I will not run a K&N anymore. They let in way too much dirt. I went with an AFE drop in filter. It was kinda of a happy medium good air flow not alot of dirt. Not much difference in the price.
Don't get me wrong if I was going to set up to race I would have a K&N they have the best air flow. But I'm not, that is why I went with the AFE.
Your stock filter is one of the best for keeping the dirt out. But air flow is nothing compared to some of the others out there.
As far as more air more mpg's that will be kinda of a hit and miss. I might have gianed .5 mpg maybe? I installed it not long after I got my truck so it could have just been part of the break in. Alot of guys on here have bought the Cold Air Intakes hoping for more mpg and did not get anything.
Do a little more research and make your own desicion.

Do you have to oil AFE drop in filters?

yea you do. if your looking for an oil-less filter AEM has one but not yet for the 06-07.
i know that AFE is goin to be comming out with one in the near future, a little different from AEM's design though.

I bought a K&N a short time ago. After I did some research I changed back to OEM. Have less than 400 miles on it. If you decide you want a K&N let me know and I'll give you a good deal on the one I have.

Stay stock. Even if you dont over oil and run into problems IMO the only benifit you get by running these aftermarket filters is they are reusable. It saves $ in the long run. But you can probably get around 20k miles or so outa your stocker and at a lil over 30$ a whack it wont kill you $ wise. Plus they do filter better.

I dynoed my 03 with a stock ac delco filter and then pulled the filter out completly and saw no real gain. I dont see much HP gain to be had by ditching the donaldson filter.

Unless your going for every last HP aftermarket intakes dont make sense to go with from a performance stand point. JMO

There is an air filter test comparing paper filters to oiled ones. I can't get it to attatch to this reply, not sure how to. If you search Air Filters you should find it. It might be a little old, 3 or 4 years, but it made me decide to stick with the stock paper filter.

I found it, click back, go to the top where 4 or 5 posts say STICKY and go to the one about air filter.

Thats for 2005 and under. They do not have one listed for 2006 or 2007. I can get 05 and under here for 28.00 but not 06-07

After all the advice and reading the sticky about air filters. Look like the stock filter is going to stay for quite some time to come. Thanks for all the help.
