better check the air filter study on that K & N, you might reconsider that mod

So what's the poop scoop on K&N????
roguedriver 08-17-2004, 11:29 PM I don't know what everyone has against K&N's here. I read the study myself and would still run them. I've had one in my 95' Z28 for the last 10 years with no issues at all and I live in dusty old New Mexico. I put one in the Dmax also. If there is stuff getting by that thing, by the time it gets anywhere critical, theres worse stuff floating around in then that. They did a study on the air filters, but who's done a study thats directly connects an engine failure or wear to a K&N? Nice clean looking truck Zsta Z 28. Is that a 35th anniversery sitting in your garage or just a Z that looks like one? Either way, it's all good. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif

i live in NM as well, and have experience with K&N ,amsoil and the stock filter. run each filter for 10000 miles and do an oil analysis after each one. you will notice higher levels of wear with the K&N and to a lesser extent with the amsoil. to each their own, if you plan on keeping it for a while like I do, I do everything I can to minimize wear. the K&N cannot provide any more air than the stock filter as the engine cannot take in anymore air than with the stock element.
i have also cleaned the intake tube after the K&N and it was pretty dirty.
i have nothing personally against it. hold it up to the light the next time you clean and then decide
Xsta Z 28 08-18-2004, 12:26 AM Appreciate the feed back on the filters, I'll keep that in mind.
Thanks for the compliments all, roguedriver, the Red Camaro is my modified 2000 Camaro SS, and to the left of the Red car (which you can barely see, but is in other albums) is my 2002 Electron Blue Berger SS. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gifEdited by: Xsta Z 28
roguedriver 08-18-2004, 11:05 AM Ski1, I certainly hope you don't keep your oil in for 10k. If you want to prevent premature ware, you'll change that sooner. As for holding them up to the light, you can see right through a stock paper filter also. If paper filters were that much better then oiled ones, then I would imagine I would see one in my dirt bike and all the previous quads i've had too. Like you said though, to each his own. But my firm belief though is regular oil changes within 5k miles. If you really want to make your vehicle last, make sure that oil gets changed fairly frequently, along with the filter. I won't let mine go for a long period of time even if an oil analysis or the owners manual tells me I can. I changed my oil on my camaro every 3 to 4k and have had the heads off, and with over 90k on it, it still looks like it just came out of the machine shop and doesn't burn a drop. Synthetic is the way to go also if you can afford it. Where abouts in NM are you at? Around the Albuquerque area or somewhere else? Have a good one.

baimpala 08-18-2004, 11:29 AM roguedriver,
There may not be proof that using an oiled filter causes damage to the engine itself, and that I really doubt. There have been cases of the oil clogging/fouling Mass Air Flow sensors to the point that they cause rough running engines because the MAF cannot perform its job correctly. Using an oiled filter on a dirt bike or quad is not the same as using it on a Duramax engine or any other engine that uses a MAF sensor.
While I don't disagree that oiled filters work great in certain applications, MANY people on this forum have done tests, and have shown no gains in HP over the stock intake. Why waste your money? Use that towards something that will make a difference.
Just my opinion. . . BTW, I have a K&N intake on my Impala, and one on the Wife's Mini Cooper S. Call me a hypocrite, but I got the one for the Impala long before I learned better, and the one for the Mini I got so I could hear the supercharger whine more clearly, which it does a fantastic job of. Time will tell whether it makes the Mini run poorly.

i dont run my oil 10K, i used that figure as a number that would easily get two oil changes under each filter, that is unless you were to run more than 5K. should have clarified that the interval was for oil anaylses, not changes. thanks for catching that
