: nasty flywheel noise (long)

Okay guys. My life is going to hell in a handbasket. On friday, my SES light came on when I was getting on the freeway. This is usually because I'm pushing it too hard, and I just pull over and turn off the truck and start it again. However, I pulled over, turned it off, and it didn't start.
So, I run through some troubleshooting with my diesel mechanic grandpa over the phone on the side of the road. Voltage seemed good and I jumped the starter with a screwdriver, and nothing happened but sparks.
At this point, I call AAA, (and almost didn't let him put it on the truck because they showed up with a ford, but the driver assured me it was cummins powered, so I agreed to let him tow it) and I got it towed to a shop that I trust. I told them it's something to do with the charging system, and they look at it and say it's the starter, and replace it.
Now, today I call them, and they say they got it to start. But now there's some nasty noise coming from it. The guy admitted he's not a diesel guy, and I know the way the timing is set it runs really rough when it's cold and not plugged in. So, I told him I'll come over and listen to it.
So, I go to the shop, and he starts it for me. At first it doesn't sound abnormal, but after a couple of seconds, there's clearly a 'ticking' noise. The longer the truck runs, the louder it gets. I move around to the drivers door, and it sounds like it's coming from the flywheel area.
I tell him to kill it, and it makes a little chirp sound, almost like a lose belt. I said it sounds like its coming from the flywheel. He said they thought so and pulled the cover off, but didn't see anything, and he thinks it could be a bolt that came out. He said they will bring it in the shop again and look at it again.

Does anyone have any idea about this? I don't want them to spend any more time than they have to working on it.
This is really screwing my life up. I don't have anything else to drive. I also don't have the money to get it fixed. It's not really a problem because my dad has no problem paying for it, but I hate selling my soul to him. :(

Thanks in advance...

To make my day better:

just got off the phone with the shop. Flywheel is busted. WTF?!!!!
ah someone say something to make it better. lol. sooooooo...
Does anyone know how much a flywheel is going to cost? I got an estimate of ~$300 for labor.
Its wonderful that this has to happen when my shop is about 3 weeks from finished...

such is life, welcome to the world. it just gets worse here on in sometimes. as for flywheel i would estimate around the 150- 250 mark. you got a automatic, so its a thin plate of steel, standard i would see it being well into the 4-500 mark. you can always do it outside. because they will probably drop the tranny. to make life easier.

Yeah. I decided I'm not gonna pay them $500+ to replace a part that I can get from my girlfriend's dad for free and waste my own time replacing. Sure it will take me 4 times as long as them, but my labor is free.
My shop is 3 weeks out. God I hate being without my truck...

When I did my flywheel took me about 2 hours. Disconnect the drive shaft
at the tranny and place to the side. Also get 2 bolts about 5/8x5" (i think). Use them as guide bolts to slide thetranny back. One bolt each side, not the top bolts, but second one down
Also make sure you have swivel sockets and long extensions. Done the flywheel thing twice last year. Part was about $50at Advanced Auto

not to diss on you, but I remember I have a transfer case to deal with. I know I can do it, it's just gonna take me a good while.

Not sure about the 6.2 and 6.5 cross but a new one at Autozone is only like $48.00

the time i tried it with a 6.2 to 6.5 swap, it didn't fit, as i remember it has something to do with the starter tooth pattern

I posted a thread, not that long ago and mine had a transfercase as well and I did it with the tranny in place using guide bolts as well

with a 6.2,... I took off the driveshaft, blocked up the transmission, then blocked up the engine with a floor jack (it rolls), and rolled the truck forward about 2" and changed the flex plate,...

when the flexplate went completely bad I thought I had lost the engine it made so much noise...

I'm wondering why the 'changing the starter' caused the flexplate to be bad and/or why if the flex plate is bad, was it certain the starter was bad?

Yeah I'm wondering what happened too. My grandpa says it's from driving the wheels off of it, but the guy at the shop says it just happens. Anyway, it will be a good 2 weeks before I fix it, probably closer to 3.

From the information I've collected, it sounds like I'm perfectly capable of doing it and it wont be too complicated, just lots of time.

I just have to live without my beast for that long...:(

ohh i know exactly how you feel, sucks not having a running truck, But for me whenever my headgaskets went i had to do it myself if i wanted to drive it again, i just couldnt afford for someone else to do it at that time...hopefully everything goes well and you get her back on the road soon.

Okay. So I guess my girlfriend's dad is warming up to me. He's letting his son (my best friend) drive his cummins dually into town today with a trailer so we can go pick my truck up at the shop. :D

Then it's just a matter of waiting for my shop to be done...
