I know the tires on our trucks from the factory are 80PSI max tires with a load rating of E or around 3000# each tire . . .
Now when shopping for new tires, wider of course, the avaialble load ratings get weak. Is a load rated tire of C at a max pressure of 55PSI and 2400# each tire a bad choice?
I do infrequently tow an enclosed car trailer that weighs in at about #8000 loaded . . .
Any thoughts? http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Geek.gif

Load ratings A, B, C... are decieving. Look at the # rating of the tire. You will find several "D"'s that match the 3000# or better.
You will have to do the math to see if 2400# is enough. In conservative terms a 1000# tongue weight on a tag-along hitch will result in ~2000# additional on the rear axle.
Ultimatly, you will be reducing the trucks hauling ability.

I run Bridgestone Winter Duelers which are C rated, something like 2600# each, but only in the winter, and I don't tow a thing in the winter.
Have had zero problems so far running on 16x8 rims.
I don't think anyone here would recommend doing anything lower than class D for towing....too much inertia loading from bumps & whatnot. Doesn't sound safe to me IMHO.

I would stay with D rated tires, (8ply), make sure they are LT tires, we have put P rated, range C tires on a Duramax before and they are wearing like crap, they will wear out way before they should.

The lower rated tires also have thinner sidewalls so more sway/roaming on the road.
Stay 'D' rated or above.
BTW BFG AT have three ply sidewalls which help when towing, I think GY MTR also have it too.
The bigger tires carry more weight w/ less air so u have a better ride w/ the bigger tires.

Thank you for all the input, I did not like the idea of "C" rating, and your feed back just enforces it!
Now I now why those tires seemed so cheap! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Wink.gif

Anybody have LT285/75R16's mounted on stock rims without a lift? Looking to upgrade and get a little ground clearance but don't want to lift the truck or do any trimming.
Otherwise i'll just go with the 265's.
Still don't know whether i want the Michelin LTX M/S's or BFG's. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

I have two sets of rims to get this accomplished.
The factory rims have BFG All terrains 245-75-16LT's on them for the winter months; very good wear and excellent traction in snow/slush and ice. They do made some noise though (hum).
The Ultra custom wheels have the Michelin LTX M/S 265-75-16 LT's on for the summer months; very quiet ride (no hum), good milage, good traction even in the rain but are not good in the mud.
Oops, just saw you live in Jersey, the Michelins might be a really good choice for all year round.

my buddy has 305/70/16's on his dmaxon the stock rims. all it took was a little torsion bar adjustment on the front. they look really cool. they are pretty much a 33/12.50 tire.
