I recently purchased a used 2003 duramax. I have the 90 day, 3000 mile GM warrenty. Am interested to know how to recognize injectors problems. My truck has 55000 miles. It drives good to me. Have not had it under any load yet, but when I have "punched it" when passing other veheicals I get a Huge cloud of black smoke. (I would hate to have to drive through it) Is this injector related or is it common to diesels. I have tried to read quite extensivly on this forum and it seems this may be injector related. Mileage is good (19 mpg) and I see no increase on the oil dipstick. Thanks

The more black smoke me likka!!! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif I always try to get more black smoke since I love smoking the neighbors PITA dog. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Evil Smile.gif
Seriously though, white smoke is usually the sign of injector problems as well as poor performance and fuel in the oil. I am learning as well but after reading different posts here that is what I learned so far. Anyone can chime in too.
Welcome to this site and congrats on the new purchase. It is addicting here so I would recommend you to not look here again. I wish I would have taken my own advice and saved several grand in the process. Always more power is a good thing.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Evil Smile.gif

I appreciate the response. It is addicting as you say, but I certainly have gotten some useful info. Replaced my fuel filter and rear end last week and plan on doing the tranmission next. Am somewhat hesitant on a additional fuel filter but will probably do that. Thanks again

Looked at their web site. Might consider that myself. I have had a diesel boat before and used the racor filters on it. Never experienced any problems. Let me know how the installation goes. Jasper2222@aol.com

You can hook up a Predator, tech two or other diagnostic scanner and have you injector balance rate checked. That is a very good starting point.
Depending on how big of a black smoke cloud you are getting could be an indicator of something? Maybe it has aftermarket power adder or maybe it needs some basic maintenance, clean fuel and a good additive mixed with a little hard driving?

jasper2222, I am thinking your engine will still have to 100,000 warranty. You will not have the bumper to bumper. I am hoping they put the 200,000 injector warranty on the 03's like the did in the 01's & 02's. I love the performance I get with my Duramax!!! Best diesel I have ever owned.
