: New Duramax Engine Install

I just purchased a 2001 GMC 3500 LB Dually which has had a new engine dealer installed under warranty. They say it's a 2004 engine. How can I tell if it is indeed a 2004? The 2001 engine sucked a valve at 70,000 miles. The new engine has 6000 miles on it now.

Also the paperwork on the new engine install states that the warranty is only good for the trucks mileage of 100,000, not the new engines mileage. Is that right? Seems to me the engine if brand new should still carry a 100,000 mile warranty. Are they trying to pull something?http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif

No, we've heard this before. The new engine only carries the remainder of the existing warranty. If you didn't pay way too much for the truck, be happy. You should be fine. You also might have the benefit of a 2004 engine and the extended 2001-2002 injector warranty because they probably go by VIN number.

In case you don't know what I'm talking about... GM recently extended the warranty on injectors to 7 years/200,000 miles on 2001-2002 trucks.

You should be in good shape.Edited by: hoot

Thanks Hoot.

I've got 30.000 miles left anyway on the 100,000. Yes, I did hear from a buddy about the injector warranty being extended, but I didn't know how that would work in my situation. I'm happy as a clam with the new engine and I think I got a decent deal.

That takes care of the second question so how can I tell if it is a 2004?

From the book of Helms:

All engines and transaxles are stamped with a partial VIN. The following table identifies the different VIN derivative characters, character positions, and their respective descriptions:

1 Division B Chevrolet Incomplete
C Chevrolet Truck
D GMC Incomplete
T CMG Truck

2 Model Year 4 2004

3 Plant Location 1 Oshawa, Ontario
E Pontiac, Michigan
Z Fort Wayne, Indiana
G Silao
F Flint

4-9 Plant Sequence Number

The engine ID tab is at the very back of the engine just above the oil filter.

I'd imagine current LB7 not a LLY as many other changes would half to occur ,ecm etc.

Dennis,

I'm sure I've found the right place, but it's pretty tight up there and can't see the figures ar the top. Bad eyes. My filter is vertical and I see the one in your pictorial is horizontal. Are the any obvious differences in the LB7 and LLY? Also what's the sensor with 3 pins just ahead of the oil filter? There's nothing connected to mine.

As you can tell this is all very new to me. Patience.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

oldwolf,

As Mac said above, the engine will be an LB7. The changes necessary to install an LLY wouldn't be done on a warranty project as they could be substantial.

The pic Dennis posted is of an LB7, which is what your replacement engine would be. There are only minor differences in the LB7 from introduction until their replacement by the LLY in January, '04, mostly relating to some injector updates and software for the computers.

Any LB7 manufactured recently will have the most recent injectors for that engine. If I were you, I'd inquire of the dealer if all the software updates for your VIN that are available have been, or need to be done...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

I hope that helps shed a little more light on your questions?

The LB7 had a few running changes throughout its life, someof them are on the block itself, the boss that sticks out of it behind the p/s is different and the o/p switch mounting/sensor was changed. Non of the changes would have an effect in any way as they can be adapted to work properly with OTC parts. Warranty on an engine replaced under warranty is until the warranty on the original is up. In your case, the motor is covered to 100k. I wouldnt worry about it as long as the install job was done well

Thanks Guys,

I'm learning more about this beast, slowly. I appreciate the help, but what is that Sensor in the block in front of the Oil Filter that has 3 pins ? Nothing is hooked up to it.

thats the oil pressure switch for the 03 and early 04's. yours is further up the block, behind the p/s pump. it is likely mounted on a standoff with a long banjo bolt type fitting...

Thanks, that's good to know.
