A Hi-Flow Air Filter, any brand will improve air flow. This is just one aspect of the 'Total Package'.

Turbo Diesels use approx. 7x more air than a N/A Diesel.

I didn't notice any improvement(seat of the pants) when I installed mine, but I did notice the Boost Gauge was more responsive.

One brand better than another? You decide.

This should keep you busy for a while: http://dieselplace.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=5657&KW=air+filter+test

I think by they end, most of them decided that paper AC delco filters were the best. (and the rest still said whatever they had was besthttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif)

I have a K&N on mine just because it is re-useable. (the '97+ round type)

There are some serious problems with that testing.

Dyno operator told me about 5hp when compared to another stock replacement filter new out of the box.

yeah, like it showed the paper filters were better.

No, like in the test method is bad. Like in saying that air flow was not improved with no filter at all. Hey, if you believe it, great.

K&N, AFE or any other cotton fiber reusable filter gets the thumbs up from me.

It's total BS that you can go 5000 or 7500 or 10,000 miles between cleanings. The longer you wait to clean it the more crud will be caked on and it doesn't come out that easy (washing it with water and cleaning agent).

I clean the three I have to at under 3000 mile intervals. They have more than paid for themselves in savings over one time papaer filters.

As far as performance, I'd rather run an oil soaked filter than a dry paper one. It may not seem that different but over the long haul it has proven itself up to the task.

Don't forget to remove that plastic restriction before the airbox that sits inside the fenderwell, and the cone between the fender and airbox.

If you want to hear your turbo whistle put on a crossover, 3" downpipe and a straight pipe back.

summit sells a flowmaster crossover and downpipe for less than $90 kit #17220 and you can get a straight 3"x10' joint for $25 from any mufflershop. Edited by: quantum mechanic

I like reuseable filters. I don't like K&N filters. Problem with K&N filters (at least according to every test I've seen) is that they trap much less dirt, which is detrimental to your engine's longevity. The Amsoil air filters have the filtration capabilities of paper plus they're reuseable like K&Ns. I would buy one except they don't make it for the '97+ 6.5s yet, at least not last I checked.

I have used a K&N filter for several years on my last 2 trucks. Here on the east coast were there is not a lot of air born dust, because we have cemented or asphalted everything over, they work great. However on my trip out west last year and after going through Utah while the dust was flying I took a look at the filter. The filter looked OK but the air tube leading to the turbo did not, It was covered with small sand particles. So I changed back to a stock filter for the balance of the trip. John Kennedy had mentioned this problem to me 3 years earlier but I had not seen the build up of sand at that time because thuck had not been expossed to high dust areas.

I now look at K&N as a "Clean Air Filter" in that if you don't need a filter that is the one to use. It will keep small birds and larger insects out and they are reusable.

As for Power, the truck still provides 12 to 15 lbs. of boost when I call for it so I would assume the net power has not changed enough to risk losing an engine for.Edited by: HowieE

The last several vehicles I've owned, the first thing I did to them was the K&N air filter, from a 79 diesel rabbit, 90 Blazer 6.2, 94 Cherokee, 94 2500 TD, to this Blazer, and I have no complaints about them.

i like the k&n because of the price. new k&n was only $45 while a new wix napa gold paper filter is $20. doesnt take long for the k&n to pay for itself. i know that k&n's don't filter as well, but i'm not real worried about my engine failing me because of too much dirt goin through the intake and combustion chamber. i am more worried about a cracked block, broken crankshaft, etc.

i wish somebody would test all of the reusable filters and see which one filters the best.

I put SVO on my fliter. It doesn't much grime past as evidenced by particles past the filter in the airbox.

what do u mean by croosover. And i already got a 3in exhaust all the way back and its straight piped so is that as loud as my turbo will get. i rode in some powerstrokes that u could hear the turbo real good when u got on it but on my 6.5 its like the engine and exhaust sound kinda over rule the turbo whistlin. p.s. this powerstroke had a 3in exhaust to, not sure if it had a straight pipe though

K&N is what comes in the BANKS Stinger kit, if it were bad I doubt Banks would spec it they are pretty conservative. Over at TDP there was atest a couple of years back that showed AMZOILS oiled filter to be somewhat better than the K&N, that is what I'm running on mine.

K&N filters don't seal as well as OEM filters and can let dirt in around the seal, I had one and scraped it as have a number of 6.5 owners.

Best upgrade you can do is get a good exhaust! That is a must in my book.

my k&n seals better than the oem filter. on my 97, the oem just slides on the intake tube, while the k&n uses a hose clamp to make a very tight seal.

mine is the same way on my '94, came with a foam strip to stick inside the airbox to make a tighter than OEM seal.
