Hey all,
I had another brainstorm the other night and trust me, this is a nutty one.....so, all you GM geniuses, put your thinking caps on....
Can the auto climate controls be retrofitted into a truck without them? Specifically, into an '02? See...told you it was nutty. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif I really should find more to do.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif
I think that little dome thing on the top of the dash is a temp sensor, and if it is, couldn't you splice into it? I figure if you could, and if you could install the auto switch thingy on the fan motor, it may be able to be done at minimal cost. Tell me if I'm nuts or if its possible, because that could be a cool mod.
Thanks guys,
Tom http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Pig.gif

The dome is a light sensor to turn on the truck's lights. Any anything is possible with a little ingenuity and enough diesel fanatics.

Hey Dennis!
Thats what I figured....lots of creative thinkers here! I figure someone will know! If that dome thing is the light sensor, what is the square thing on the windshield next to the rear-view mirror?

You wouldn't really be able to retrofit the climate control out of an 03 or 04 into your 02. However there was a less fancy auto climate control availble for the 02's. It should work. Most likely plug and play.
The dome thing in the headliner that looks like a little speaker IS a temp sensor. It has a little fan in it to pull in interior air.
I would take the climate control OUT of my 2001 GMC if I still had the truck and I could. It did control temps pretty well and had lots of functionality but it didn't produce low levels of heat on slightly cooler days. Cool mornings it would fog the windows with cold air. No low level heat during spring and fall.

hoot,
I think TheBAC is talking about the one in the center of the dash forward towards the windshield which I believe is an ambient light sensor. I didn't know that the interior air temperature had a fan in it. It sure is quiet. The stuff in this truck never ceases to amaze me.
TheBAC,
The one just above your head that looks like a speaker (about 1-1/2" diameter) is the temp sensor for automatic climate control, as hoot says.
The thing that is an integral part of the rear view mirror and stuck to the windshield at the top is the ambient photosensor for autodimming.
The little smiley face looking thing to the left of the overhead console is the microphone for onstar/personal calling.
I learned the automatic climate control/onstar microphone difference after I'd been cussing out my climate control sensor when the onstar phone couldn't figure out the difference between my 2s and my 8s. Pretty funny actually.
I think if you wanted to do some kind of retrofit of sensors/etc. you'd wind up designing your own circuitry (not too hard) and connecting it to your existing stuff. This would be the cheapest way if you know how to design circuits. If not then Max Powers way is the way to go. If it was an available option for '02, then you could just get the parts and put them in your truck.

Dennis, Hoot, Max...Thanks for the info! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
It was an available option in '02, I know a guy whose '02 has the unit. He has an extra dome sensor in the middle of the top of the dash for it, right next to the other dome one. I never looked in the headliner.
Hoot...So THAT's what that speaker thing is for. I've seen those in other vehicles...
I was just toying with the idea. Just another mod that I dont have. My wife's Blazer has auto temp and it works great....
Thanks guys

The sensor on your dash (2002) is different than the sensor on the trucks with auto-climate control I'm pretty sure.
The trucks without auto-climate have two wires that go to the BCM for the auto-headlights, while the trucks with auto-climate control have four wires coming from the sensor to the BCM......two for the auto-headlights and two for the auto-climate control.

On the '03 the little dome on the dash has the photocell for headlight control as well as 2 "sun load sensors" pointing to the sides of the truck. They don't look like photocells to me. My best guess would be thermistors.

Ok..what the heck is a "themistor"? http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif
Thanks Minn and Wayne......if I could find wiring diagrams for both types of systems in an '02....I bet I could think something up.
