OK so I am getting ready to change the trans filter and fluid for the first time and I have looked around and can't really find what I want to know. How much fluid do you really get out of the pan and filter. ( How much should I buy? ) I know to use the Allison filter I found that out before I found out about the Diesel Place. What kind of fluid are guys running? All I seem to see is Transyde or what ever it is. Any other words of wisdom before the job is started?

Thanks
And I did try a search and didn't really get what I wanted.

I believe its only like 7 or 8 quarts if you drop the pan but dont quote me on that Eric or Mike should know for sure

Previous posts indicate: Stock shallow pan capacity-7.4 qts when drained.
Large pan capacity-7.4 qts. + 3.2 qts.=10.6 qts.
Total capacity-(dry system) shallow pan=12.7 qts.
Total capacity-(dry system) deep pan=15.9 qts.

When you say filter, are you talking about the external spin-on, or the internal filter.

The external should be changed about every oil change and the internal really does not need to be changed until a rebuild or different pan is installed.

Your 2005 Allison came with dino DexIII, you can use, dino ($), or synthetic ($$) DexIII, or you can go top shelf and replace with TranSynd ($$$), QuatraSyn, or Amsoil's Torque Drive.

If you change the external filter dont forget the washer magnet that will be stuck to the filter, alot of people throw these away cause they dont know they are there,I dont understand why your changing the internal filter though.

I am not going to change the internal filter.

The book says like 22qts total. but if you just drain 7 or 8. If you go to synthetic, I would recommend a hoot flush or find someone that has a flash machineto get all the old out.

Good idea to try to get all the old fluid out, as quoted. Ckeck with a Allison dealer if you can to see how they would recommend to do it, or if you are going to do it yourself, lots of members have done it.
