whatshould mileage be for 04 LLY motor in crew cab 4x4? i am in ny running winter fuel? I just bought the truck and I am only getting 12mpg in short distances mainly around 5-8 miles one way. is there something i should check or is it normal.

First welcome to the forum. Try to fill in your signature so we know your truck. I think your mileage is about right. That is what I get in town but I have 35 inch tires. These trucks are real sensitive to the right foot.

Are you hand calculating mileage? Can vary a lot from what the DIC says. I usually get 14-16 local. Towing it drops down to 9-11.

If I am running the stock tuning, I am right in that 12 MPG range for city driving. Most of my trips are short too - I live 2 miles from my work and probably drive 10 miles total for the day. I think the combination of short trips, winter fuel, and cold weather where the truck barely warms up really hammers the mileage.

x2 I think your right in the expected range. I work 4 miles frome home. I get 11-12 mpg. I have a brick tied to my go petal. :D

That's it.

The engine isn't efficient until it is warm. Colder weather combined with short trips don't yield high mpg numbers. On top of this, the engine and the transmission modify their behavior to help get the engine up to temp faster (so that it will be efficient). For example, the turbo has more backpressure and the transmission shift points are altered to decrease warm up time. (this decreases efficiency).

Longer trips will yield you much higher mileage. With stock tires and driving at a moderate speed should get you very good highway mileage. My DIC reads 26 mpg when doing 50-55 mph on work commute... (the speed limit is 55 and there is moderate traffic and yeah, I know it isn't completely accurate).

Where in NY are you at? Also if its not up to operating temp, it'll never get good mileage.

I drive a short distance to work as well and since it's been really cold here my mileage has dropped from 15 to 13 and I'm guessing on this latest tank I'm gonna be in the 12's.

Leaving it idle to warm up (especially on high idle) will kill your mileage. And I've noticed that the engine runs higher RPM's until the transmission warms up enough to kick into high gear. On my short trips to work this happens just before I get there. Not good for the mileage. Winter blend fuel doesn't help the mileage either, but you don't want to be stranded with a gelled up fuel filter.

Guess I'm in the same boat now. I swear my LB7 did better but I didn't really check it all that often.

You better hang onto that truck! Just wish I could get 22/23; never busted 20 here. I can get the 12 with the fiver, if I drive around 60-65 mph and no headwind ( 10K empty ).

His sig doesnt say whether his truck is 4WD. I think it's fairly common for the guys with 2WD's to get 20+ MPG empty.

I have a cc/4x4 and drive aprox 300kms(190 miles) every day, with a 6 inch lift and 315/75/16 rubber at anywhere from 55-80 miles an hour steady and my dic stays at about 11.5 mpg, regardless of speed.I haven't figured it out manually yet but i figure i am burning 40 - 50 liters(+/- 11 gallons) of fuel a day. I am running my predator at 65hp and no other upgrades YET!!

I think you would be amazed to see the difference between 55 and 80.

Try and reset your DIC, and run 50 miles at 80.

Then reset it again, and run 50 miles, (or as long as your back bumper will stand it) at 55.

I wouldn't be surprised you'll get near 18-19 US mpg at steady 55, and near 12-14 at 80!!! ( If you're getting average 11.5, you're not running 55 very often, and your average gets pulled down a lot by the first 20 miles running cold)

Speed kills, they say - not always, but you do pay whether or not you die!!

So, let's see here.

If you run 100 miles one way, at a difference of say 5 mpg, you might save 1.7 gallons at 55, and you might save a half hour at 80, if the freeway/interstate is clear!

The way I figure it, if you're going to get paid starting when you get there, and you make more than $10.00 per hour US or $13.00 per hour Canadian after taxes, (excluding cost of speeding tickets) put your foot down!!!

On the other hand, it sure cuts into your net returns!!!

Doesn't count on the way home, nobody's going to pay you to get there, so you'll need different logic for that.

That's been my experience too. Today I drove from CT to NJ and got 21.5 mpg with winter fuel. Summer fuel can add about 1 mpg. I met a guy the other day who was driving a 06 LBZ and had owned a 04.5 LLY before - his LBZ is getting lousy milage - only about 12-13 mpg hwy. His LLY was getting milage like mine.

I live in carthage ny. and is there an easy way to change the fuel filter or what? and My running temp in the winter is about 200-210 with the winter cover on and outside temp -10-+20 do these engines runn hot or should i be concerned especially about towing in the summer months?

also I am interested in buying an AFE stage II air intake does anyone have this and what are the benefits I will see(mpg, more power, etc, running cooler than 210 in the winter with my cover) lol

This was the first modification I did to my 2004.5 other than synthetic Amsoil 15-40. I saw about 1/4 to 1/2 mpg gain with thie cold air intake. I recommend getting the pre filters from Kennedy diesel. The pleats in this filter like the K&N catch alot of dirt and debris that is hard to clean out to re-oil. The pre screen keeps this out of the filter. You only need to clean the prefilter in Soapy water and I've really liked it since.
