military used 24v across the board on all its equipment. regular chevy alt. and 12v diesel starter will work. junction blocks on the firewall are where the batteries connect to the vehicle. your batteries must be connected in parallel instead of in series, parallel connection is as follows. + to + to junction block. - to - to ground. thus doubling the cranking amps of the 12v battery. series connection goes 1st battery - to ground then + to 2nd battery - then + to junction block. the starter and the two alternators along with the slave cable receptical and trailering connection in the rear, and the voltmeter were the only things used in the 24v system . the rest of the truck is already 12 v use one alt, preferably a 100 amp output and connect the batteries parallel make sure the starter lead is on the same junction block as the incoming battery lead and you got it. remember to turn the lights on even for braking and signaling , you have to flip the service lights toggle switch on. hope this helps
