I am talking about the Transgo Shift kit that does not require Tranny removal, just rebuilts the Valve body/springs. I know it helps protect from burning clutches and limp mode which is a plus. My ? is does it feel different? Does it do what a traditional shift kit is know for, quicker firmer shifts? I experience what feels like a real lazyhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Dead.gif shift from 2 to 3. Perhaps with the Gas motors higher Rpm range makes the shift feels like it takes to long compared to the Diesel?Edited by: 8100

A good traditional shift kit wont produce really firm shifts, just nice crisp ones when you are on it....you musta been riding in some B&M equiped cars if you have a fear of rattleing the teeth outa your headhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif A transgo equiped truck feels pretty much like stock, I wouldnt say lazy but its definatly not a quick real firm shift. IMO the transgo/allison equiped trucks shift fast/firm enough to get the job done but dont get into the "cosmetic" overly hard shift that dont do anything IMO. Anywho.....the transgo kit will require you pulling the trans, you have mess with a couple of valves and springs in the pump. Its very easy to do and nothing to be worried about though. The innards of the alli are pretty easy. But getting the alli in and out can be a PITA since she is a heavyhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Pig.gif

Edit: I dont know what the 8.1 does in terms of backing down the power between or while shifting? This may be something you are feeling??? Eric or someone else should be able to answer that though.Edited by: ratlover

With the 8.1 their is a fail safe feature called torque management. It will retard timing and decrease fuel injection to protect the drivetrain and engine. It is a predetermined program in the ECM. There are software programmers out there that will reduce the amount of TM and really wake up the 8.1. But as always, use at your own risk.

There is torque management with every Ally. We call it defuel with diesels. Take the slip out of the Ally with a Transgo shift kit ( ratlover is correct, trans must come out) and install a Suncoast converter and watch that 8100 perk up.

When the truck is cold, not up to temp, my transgo ally will shift very firm. Usually if I'm not babying it, the first time I hit second I will chirp the tires. After that you can't tell you have a shift kit unless you are @ WOT. Then it's firm and quick but not jerky.

The transgo will GET'R DONE!!!

The stock Ally will shift a little firm when cold because of thick cold fluid. If I could patent the stock cold shift from the Ally, I would be in hog heaven.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

Another thing seperate from how the ally shifts when cold and this just adds to things.....Juice also dosnt add power till it sees 142 degrees(170 or so on my stock gauge IIRC), so you have stock power and the allison thinks it has extra power so it is shifting in a way to deal with the extra power(with more nuts) I dont know what it feels like under harder throttle, I really ***** foot it till she is all warm. I duno if i could chirp em?http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

Yeah, I have a stoplight and a steep hill just after leaving my driveway each morning........I don't baby'er much in the summer when she's cold.........she's not THAT cold. I usually start my day with a cold WOT run up that hill........complete with shift chirp......when she's warm I leave twin pavement snakes up that hillhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Evil Smile.gif

I agree that kick in the pants is nice.........might get old in city driving......I am actually very happy about the way my Ally shifts....I try to only play in T/H mode and that seems to help the Ally keep the pressures appropriate for the driving style.......it never comes out of level 5.....http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

She is smooth as "Butta" when I'm loafing around and hit the T/H and drop the hammer and it bangs out shifts pretty quick and clean

couldn't be happier with the whole setup. (well I could always use more power)
