Mac http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley8.gif well i switched to the suncoast but dont take it to mean that bd trannys wont hold.the problem i had was in the install and getting it setup 100 percent bugg free.i beat the crap out of the bd tranny and it never slipped.the deal with either the bd or the suncoast tranny is haveing someone install it that knows what they are doing.i had a mechanic buddy install mine and we called bd and they told us what to do and how it should feel .problem was we all wernt understanding each other and under or over adjustments were made in error.its a pain to keep taking the tranny pan off trying to reset the pressure ect.....i do like the sun coast very much truck acts like it is 100 percent stock, but for those that are close to a bd install center the bd tranny may be worth taking a look at......jess

Have an offer for a kit from TTS, which supposedly is the same kit that Suncoast is using, TransGo parts. That may be the way I go. I have installed a ATS III in Mike Tomacs truck and we got the bugs out of it, works good now, nice and firm when you want it, cant tell its there when yo dont..

If I install the TTS kit, I will document everything for an article/post here on DP for all to see

Diesel Power - " What is the deal with the ATS controller? sounds like a cool gizmo but how do the others get by without? "

Maybe they don't ???

The "bugs" Eric is refering to with the ATS was a tiny spring we left out of a trim cylinoid (sp?) that caused a harsh shift into reverse. Pulled the pan and put the spring back in and the shift into reverse is smooth as silk. Otherwise there was just a few quirky shifts after clearing the Allison's brain and putting it into fast learn mode so it could learn the shift pressures again.

I dont know what that ATS controller"controls" But it sounds to me like the LED shift mechanism on Allison World Class Trannys, where you can push a button and shift/downshift/or hold the same gear..kinda like a tiptronic....but not, on Internationals...(I call em 13 letter shizit spreaders) on the shift stalk theres buttons for each gear..you hit the button as you want em' or not....Bill

The ats controller adjusts the agressiveness of the shifts and at what boost the agressive shifts come on. With the controller turned on the Allison shifts like it has a shift kit in it and with it off it shifts like stock. The controller also controls an exhaust brake and the converter lockup and unlock. It will lock up sooner in 2nd gear and stay locked until about 10 mph deccelerating (good for exhaust brake use and truck pulling with the converter locked). The controller also gets rid of the top speed limiter.

The ATS tranny is the key to my fast times. Until I see proof otherwise I think ATS is the way to go for pulling, dragracing & towing. For Dragracing you can't afford to lose even a few hundreths of a second with each shift and converter lockup. Those with Suncoast, BD or Transgo/TTS are(will) have trouble matching my times with the same mods on the motor in a similar weight pickup.Edited by: mtomac

nothing gives here just wanted to see what others thought of something they have that i dont its hard for me to make assumtions on what other s got if i know nothing about it ...just simply asking how mackin like the suncoast.....tomac i talked to you in the pits a shieds a little....(besides the point) but are you running the first ats controller clint sent you or do you have a nother one he has completed..hes suposed to be sending me one this week ....(i think) along with an accumulator spring(?) he says this may make some of the shifts alittle smoother....

Micheal Tomac

I've only had one controller, mine is the adjustable one. The earlier ones didn't allow you to adjust the boost the agressive shifts come in at.Edited by: mtomac

Glad I got the 6speed instead of worrying about spending the cash for an allison plus upgrades, the downside, the autos will 99percent of the time be quicker since they maintain boost..oh well.

You'll have to wait a bit ... Hopefully it can be arranged that my truck will be up on the lift Sunday for some needed medical repair ,has a distinctive limp ... Go figure ...

Took Geerhead out for a "before" ride ... I think he was quite surprised of the ease to slip and find neutral ... I really have to feather the throttle passing on the interstate he can attest to ..

Your right ,,, But the handshacker gets more power to the ground less drivetrain lose .... Problem is the flywheel has it's limitations also like the Allison tranny and there has yet to be a fix that works ... Soon hopefully for you rowers...

my box has the sub levels as well how do you drive it on the street in the middle on both ? im just trying to find out so mine will shift alittle bit better on highway ....its rough at 5:30 in the morning...

mac keep me posted if you would thanks

What you are probably experiencing is the Juice not giving you power until the motor is warmed up. When my tranny was stock it would shift a little firmer until the juice came on because the tranny had learned that it needed firmer shifts for the extra power when it was there. Other boxes don't have this delay until the engine temp is up and the truck doesn't have the firm shifts when cold. Even with the ATS kit it will do this with the juice because the TCM is expecting the power to be there.

I don't turn the controller on for "daily driving", I just use it for pulling and dragracing (on and off track) where I have it set the most agressive.

SmokinMax
09-10-2003, 05:13 PM
im sure its not the juice ive been driving juiced for a 1 year or more i know the power dosent come on untill 190 or so ....i havent triued leaving controller off driving down street with or with out juice the shifts are FIRM ...the down shifts rattling...any ideas...do you have the accumulator spring in your valvue body?

What down shifts are rattling? I've been running ATS Level 3 for 10K miles already. I run the controller on for daily driving. I know of 3 issues with the ATS upgrade at this time. Clint has been working on them daily. I have not heard about the accumulator spring needing to be removed.

Micheal Tomac

accumulator spring???

BMDMAX
09-11-2003, 05:38 PM
I went with the Suncoast because I did not want another box to fool with. My truck is a daily driver & hauler rather than a drag racer or sled puller. The Suncoast will hold up to the level of power that I want, allow me to drag race 3 or 4 times a year and keeps it simple for daily use.

I guess I just don't want another gizmo trying to tell the Allison what to do. The tranny already is adaptive and it knows what needs to happen next with ISS, OSS, Turbine speed, TC lockup, Etc. All you need to do is make the tranny stronger and it will figure out the rest. It's like trying to tell a female (Allison) what to do when it's mind is made up already.....you are gonna get a fight and some weird results. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

My Suncoast has been flawless so far and I love the way it shifts.

SmokinMax
09-11-2003, 06:55 PM
no the spring needs to go in my tranny in vaule body is what clint told me at shieds......i leave controler on all the time 24/7..... the hard shifts is still 3rd just like the limping stock ally....the 4th down into third will sometimes bark tires...

JakeGMCHD

You are talking about the trim solenoid spring. If you keep boost below 8 psi or run full throttle you won't have a harsh shift into 3rd. Have never experienced the 4-3 down shift bark. I have the 2-1 down shift bark.
