Is there any way to set the injection pump timing properly without a Tech 2 or MT2500 or OBD2 computer hookup? I know the Benz can be done with a drip tube or a runout micrometer. Any mechanical only way with the 6.5TD? Mine seems to be way off, getting black sooty deposits out the tailpipe and code 216 and 236 everyday.

Go thru the turbocharger diagnostics in FAQ's to cure P0236

Dang - your good! I had no vacuum from pump at idle = no boost. Read the faq. Going the mechanical way. The mechanic I bought this from said he replaced the vac pump 3 times.

Very good, lifer - now, heal it, clear the codes, and see if the P0216 reoccurs, and we can take from there.
BTW - that should also clear up the black sooty deposits.

Well, in the process of stripping off the vacuum pump in preparation for the Heath TM, I found out the vacuum line was unplugged from the pump - hence no vac at solenoid. After reconnecting, got 25 in Hg at solenoid on black line and 22.5 in Hg on orange line after solenoid at idle. Is that too much vac at turbo indicating bad solenoid?

Vac pump = 25" at idle
WG = 15" at idle
WG solenoid may be sticking - the valve is vented to atmposphere, so the shuttle rusts, then begins to bind.
WD40 can patch it till you get another - part number in FAQ's, about 35 shekels
