Is the Alpha series engine mentioned in the thread below( under 05 Hummer ) going to be a series of engines that the trucks will get too? I wonder in this is what Cool was hinting at back a few months ago. Any guesses on the HP/torque??

I was under the impression that it will be an LLY motor with Ally trans. Have not heard anything else to confirm nor deny any type of new motor. Should be something coming out soon with all the info about it. Give it some time.

According to what GM has released Alpha is not a new engine. What they are doing is sticking the Duramax/Allison combo in the original H1 and calling the entire package the Alpha series.

http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif Does GM need any more headaches than she has right now with the Duramax diesel engines? The LB7 has its issues, the LLY isn't likely to escape without some of her own. IMO the LLY is an improvement.

GM should get the bugs worked out of the Duramax before taking on yet another diesel engine design. The problems they have had with the LB7 injectors has costs GM millions in sales and is going to cost GM big time for several years backing up the extended warranties they put on them. I'm very happy with the LLY so far. The Allison is awesome. JJ http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif

I would guess it's a marketing, money thing. The injector issue is a supplier design problem that will be worked out over time. I'm not sure Hp output has any effect on the injectors. If GM offers a high output version of the LLY you can bet it will come at a high premuim. I still doubt this engine will ever make it but I still remember Cools thread on the 06's. I think the issues with such a high output motor will be simialar to what the chipped boys are running into, tranny issues.

I don't think there are LB7's in production anymore. I wonder how they are dealing with warranty and future replacements?

They are hopeful they all last beyong 7yrs/200K then they can let the aftermarket pick up the replacements.........

Unless the LLY injectors are of the same physical design and will fit the LB7's

Tony.... I don't mean just the injectors... which by the way are different. I mean the whole engine... cooled egr, heads, VGT turbo and all has replaced the LB7 design. I think by law they need to assure ten years.

The cylinder heads are the biggest issue IMHO. They are factory GM parts. Both the turbocharger and the injectors have been outsourced and should continue to be available. The IHI turbo is likely a stock item that may be used for other engines - maybe not. The injectors are already available from other suppliers than that of bosch. If they ensure 10 years - I should be good anyway. The 1st 400K in the 1st 10 years, and then If I need new heads, I'll be good for another 400K. By then I'll probably want something new. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

By the time these trucks reach 200,000 miles they're junk anyway so who cares. The engine will be the last thing to go. I had a Ford with 270,000 on it and it's not the way to go. Broken seats, wipers, switches.....the list goes on and on. Give me 400 hp that lasts 150,000 miles and will burn the tires off and I'll be happy.

the alpha engine is an engine in itself, it is different from the LLY, so when we do produce it we will have 4 engine running down the line, we have the LLY, the 560 series, and soon to have the Alpha, and the workhorse motor

What are the applications of these motors?

the LLY is obvious the 560 series motor is for the kodiak-topkick, the alpha is for the H1 alpha the workhorse motor is for workhorse custom chasis(http://www.workhorse.com/), they make custom urban bus chasis, they use to use the cummins and the alison, but now gonna use the duramax:) hope that helpsEdited by: kool

Well I drove a Plymouth Sundance for 210,000 miles from new (insert ridicule here), with no real issues other than crappy front brakes - original IHI turbo/engine/clutch and tranny. I better get almost twice that out of this bugger or I'm not going to be real happy. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Wink.gif
